If he were to have gone hard at the weights Tua would have wound up with the approximate range of mobility of a baby panda wearing chain mail.
There are clips of him lifting weights (bench press & leg press iirc) in the pre fight build up to the Lennox Lewis fight. I don't think his 42lbs weight gain the span of 6 years would have been possible to achieve without weight training
ive experienced this myself going from doing a lot of weights to being thrown in the deep end having to do a ton of cardio. I suffered.
Thank you. From a guy who has had first hand experience taking a few punches from the islanders, they are just naturally solid mofos. Without the lifting they are just genetically large. A family lives across the street from me and their sons play HS football . 9th and 10th grade built like Mayweather's security.
yeah ive been beaten up a couple of times by samoans, both times it wasnt my fault either but oh well. Still lovely people generally.
I know Tua "sparred" grown men at a young age. I put the quotations around the word sparred because apparently, Tuas dad asked the men to go hard in sparring against David Tua the teenager.
More accurately, like The Rock/Usos/Roman Reigns. (Tua has loose familial ties with their Anoa'i clan; Joe is afaik unrelated to any of them)
Tua was a real SAMOAN - and all the kiwis and ozzies on here know exactly what I mean. His struggle was always to keep the pounds off. Naturally a very strong, thickset people.
I tend towards this explanation. Samoans are built like refrigerators. Maybe evolution wanted them to hunt sharks with their bare hands. Pracically every Samoan fighter I can think of is square.
Kiwi do you find Tongans generally a bit taller, a little more mass distributed to the upper body?? Though I know a couple who have a Tua/Hunt sort of build aswell.
He was a lot leaner than the likes of Fury and Ruiz when he fought Lewis in 2000. He was 245lbs at 5'10. Even if he got very lean he would have been 225 - 230lbs which is huge for someone that small.
