Schmeling at his best gives Heavyweight Charles a serious fight. I'm tempted to side with his counter rights, actually. Charles could definitely be tagged at Heavy.

Idk ,I'm tempted myself to pick Max ,he has some excellent wins at heavyweight , not saying Charles didn't , but Max was a true Heavy and Charles was moving up . But head to head , maybe Charles does it . He had the skills and the heart , so maybe he'd get a Dec over Schmeling ..

    Ezzard Charles vs Max Schmeling

Schmeling was a very smart fighter, almost as smart as Charles. He had a very accurate right hand, that he set up well and had good pop in it as well. His jab was a very good ploy for it, he reminds me of Bernard Hopkins in some regards.

Ezzard was a hittable fighter at HW, he was not as quick. He'd be able to win certain exchanges on the inside due to his quicker hands. Max was crafty and I don't think he'd be silly enough to give Ezzard opportunities to win rounds when he didn't have to and would try and keep the fight outside whilst letting Ezzard flurry to catch him with right hand traps. I see him tagging Charles enough to win rounds clearly whilst keeping himself out of danger

Charles would have to think ahead and throw feints for Max to counter that he could then counter himself, he'd have to get inside and make it ugly. To nullify Max's reach advantage he'd have to duck and weave into his punches, it's risky but he'd be able to land some nice leather. I doubt Max would let him do that often but Ezz would catch him throughout the fight. If Max made any mistakes or when Ezz made him miss he would have to clinch and flurry inside. He'd win more rounds doing that than trying to box at Schmeling's range.

I think this goes the distance as neither were absolutely monster punchers and both were somewhat durable. Over 15 I think that Ezzard would eventually start to catch on to what Schmeling would be doing and make the correct adjustments and start parrying and countering his rights and flicking his hooks over the jab. Over 15 imagine that Max would win 7/8 with a few close rounds that could go either way with Charles winning 6/7. So I take Max by decision in an ugly fight. Where Max wins more rounds but Charles lands the nicer, more eye catching punches.

    Max Schmeling UD15.

Your arguments are well thought out, I love Charles at Lt Heavy , and could not complain about anyone picking him, but Max at his best beat Joe Louis. very close.

I go back and forth on this a lot.

I'll say this, Schemling beat a vastly better version of Louis, Charles' resusme has more depth though.

Louis looked fantastic against Schmeling to be honest!

I am convinced that he would have destroyed any other heavyweight in the world at the time!

I can't escape the feeling that Schmeling was a bit better than Charles and Walcott!

Nice to see Schmeling finally getting the respect he deserves. Outboxing Max is unbelievably tough and Charles doesn't have the punch to just destroy him. I'd probably take Schmeling over Ezzard, he was a bit bigger and more powerful. He was also durable and skilled enough to keep coming at Ezzard and counter him with his terrific right hand.

Schmeling right hand counter is possibly the best in HW division history. Not the most powerful, but the best in terms of accuracy and versatility.

I would install Marciano as the favorite, but perhaps not by a lot.
