You’re not really getting it. 7 footers as a group will take a punch better than 6 footers because they’re bigger people. Most 7 footers aren’t cut out to be pro ball players or boxers whereas you have to go searching to find a six footer who could be a top boxer or basketball player.
Not really. Lots of tall fighters are packing glass. Mike Tyson has a much better chin then David Price and theres a foot difference in height between them.
People dont understand that there is a big difference dribbling a ball and jogging across a small court in basketball and boxing someone. Large people are incredibly uncoordinated for boxing.
To be honest both sports are extremely difficult to be good at. As a former player and recruiter I’ve seen plenty of 6’8” -7’0” tall guys not make it. Also, handling the ball at speed is very difficult when playing against other top flight players. Boxing like basketball is a thinking man’s game, but just in a different way. If you don’t luck up and get signed to a long term contract you have to produce like nobody’s business to stay hired in the NBA on short term contracts. Jerry West was ruthless when I was on the Lakers Summer League and would dock your pay if you missed an open shot or had more than 3 turnovers and if you didn’t like it he’d point you to the door.
The fact that the skill less Valuev went so far is a testament to the advantage super tall heavys have, not vice versa.
Yes I agree, 40 years ago boxing fans were having these exact same arguments about how it was impossible for a guy over 6.4 to win the belt because they were too,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Wait for it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Too uncoordinated and slow. Well I told them that was crap and look at LL, Riddick, Vlad, Vit, Wilder, AJ s and Fury. And you idiots want to tell us that in the future a good seven footer is not possible?? Who wants a horsewhipping first????
Valuev had skill actually. He did the basics well enough. Size helped him to some extent and hindered him in other ways. But he wasn't some skilless bum who didn't know how to box like some like to claim.
Yes of course that’s correct but in real ways he was very slow and uncoordinated compared to the norm at heavy, which is what we are comparing. So there is a bit of both going on is what I am saying. Put it this way, 40 years ago a Fury size guy with above the norm timing and skills was considered impossible by the majority of boxing fans because I remember talking to them about this same discussion. Back then it was anything over 6.4 rather than stretching it as far as 7 foot which may be a bit much but maybe 6.10 plus in the next few decades is possible.
Yes for sure,, Here’s the thing I bet we are disagreeing about, too many fans make it sound like all a fella has to have is hight and that’s totall BS. Take a guy like Lebron for example, just because he is so tall, large atheistic and fast does not mean he could win a title if he started training. Most good athletes (including myself back in the day) can simply not take a solid punch. It’s true. The percentage of guys that can take a solid punch is low. It’s what makes the the sport of boxing so different, difficult and brutal. It’s rare for anyone to be able to take consistent solid punches (which you need to do before getting better) and keep growing with boxing rather than plateauing into a defensive fighter too focused on not getting tagged. Be they 7 feet tall or 5 feet tall. The gym I belonged to often had really great boxers walk out the door and not come back because who wants to go home with a monster head ache and not be able to chew solid food without pain on a regular bases? Put it this way, my point is over time they will keep getting taller rather than vice versa even if there are lots of small guys that succeed against them as well. That’s simply the current trend and I think it will slowly keep continuing.
