Why does no one ever talk about Juan Manuel Marquez is a one dimensional fighter?

I'll say this: Do you honestly see JMM beating the likes of Erik Morales x2, Miguel Cotto, Tim Bradley x2, or Keith Thurman? I think not.

No he does not. Yes Pacquiao is a better fighter than Marquez. Not even his most ardent fans usually argue that.

Yet one of the biggest Marquez fans on this site @Beouche came in and first thing he said was Marquez knocked out Pacquiao.

Yes we know. We get it. The fights themselves have been discussed to exhaustion. Give a rest already. The thread is actually a fairly original topic. Designed to discuss the career of Marquez which included more than 4 fights.

Come on guys, one dimensional DOES NOT mean unskilled.

Marquez is a one dimensional fighter. Always kept a similar gameplan, boxed a similar and struggled with similar styles. Great counterpuncher; couldn't lead.

He's also not an ATG. But that's another debate.

The short answer is because he's not one dimensional.

The ATG thing is a debate. I'd rate him borderline ATG but on the ATG side but I digress.

You're right the man fought the same way everytime. It's all right there in the tape. Guys, we all saw it. We are not blind.

Morales and Cotto are tossed up fights especially the Cotto that was coming from a brutal assault from Margarito and the Morales that was coming from a embarrassing defeat from Raheem, wouldn't be surprised if he gives Thurman hell, he looked like garbage against the one and only Jose Lopez ffs

He was a Very Good fighter who had an ATGs number.

Not that rare in boxing history.

I hate to break it up to you, but Marquez did much better against Pacquiao Rocky Juarez and Robbie Peden than Barrera did, What's your excuse now?

That's a good comparison. Both elite, world level fighters, who could best an ATG by stylistic advantage, but not best other ATGs around the same time (Foreman, Mayweather etc).

Not sure why Marquez is being brought up so often recently. He wasn't really considered an ATG until he defeated Pacquiao convincingly. Marquez definitely wasn't the best leading, but most fighters aren't exactly great going off the back foot either. Most boxers play to their strengths and try to impose that style. Rarely have we seen Pacquiao fight off the back foot, rarely have we seen Mayweather lead off the front foot.

In general counter punchers struggle with other counter punchers because they are used to other fighters coming at them. Even if you look at Whitaker he struggled against Diosbeys Hurtado and was losing the fight until he knocked him out. Mayweather struggled against Zab Juduh. For a long time Mayweather said his toughest fight was against Emanuel Augustus.

The other part about being an effective counter puncher is that it relies on a few physical attributes, being taller, faster, rangier, excellent reflexes. If you are fighting someone who taller or faster it's going to be a struggle to dominate the counter attacks.

As far as Marquez work against pure boxers, he won the lineal championship at lightweight against pure boxer Casamayor. As far as Marquez legacy, it's a little on the thin side compared to other ATG's, many controversial losses and missed opportunities. However he will be known for being a 4 weight champ, solid wins against Robbie Peden, Orlando Salido, Rocky Juarez, Joel Casamayor, Juan Diaz, Michael Katsidis and Mike Alvarado. ATG wins against Barrera and of course Pacquiao.
