Who is the greatest featherweight of all-time, Max or Jose? Was Conor a greater feather than both of them? This content is protected
Agree. I think it is harder to defend a belt over and over and over against top contenders than to just earn a title shot then never defend it. Imo the UFC should only allow a title holder to jump division and therefore jump the contender queue for a title shot if they have defended a good 4 or so times in their own weight class.
Nobody can say aldo or holloway are better 145ers then Mcgregor. Mcgregor beat both guys. Who cares about defenses.
Aldo is still the FW goat. If Max can defend for a few more years then he's got a case. I don't put much stock into their fights esp the farce that was the 2nd fight with a semi-shot, short notice, no gas tank Aldo.
Max said he still thinks Aldo is the GOAT. Yeah by a hair due to longevity probably. But I think Max would have always had his number. Horribly matchup due to his elite striking, chin and ability to go through the gears. Aldo never had great stamina. He gassed against Jung who was coming on before suffering an unfortunate injury, Lamas and even Hominick earlier into his reign(Mark actually had a 10-8 5th)
While he could never be classed as a cardio machine, Prime Aldo was capable of fighting at a hard pace for 3 rounds before coasting in the championship rounds (Edgar, Faber, Florian, Mendes 2 etc). The version Max faced was badly fatiguing after only a few minutes. Their first fight where Aldo was dominating and landing big power shots that rocked Max around the cage before ultimately breaking down from exhaustion suggests a prime Aldo could take the first 3 frames and just need to survive the last 2.
Yeah but that JUST is a big if especially against a guy like Holloway. If far lesser fighters were able to take the fight to Aldo in the later frames then Aldo is probably in trouble against Holloway. I don't think Aldo's decline is as profound as other great champions of the past either. Even today he's still a top 5 Featherweight easily. How diminished was he against Holloway? a bit maybe but night and day? I don't think so. Im still tipping Holloway as a favorite over any version of Aldo. H2H I just think he has his number.
Aldo has the better resume in my opinion. But Aldo wasn't a five round fighter at anytime he's been in UFC. To me that always kept him from the top of the pound for pound ratings. At his best, he'd beat Holloway in three round fights 100 percent of the time. Hard to argue that he would beat Holloway in a five round fight though, with the late round issues he had with Lamas and Hominick. Holloway has a hell of a chin as well.
I have heard rumours about a rematch and some of my bookies even have odds on the fight ,I think the time is right for Aldo v Mcgregor to rematch. Aldo talked about it after he got KO'd but avoided Mcgregor like the plague and we were robbed of seeing if the loss was a mere fluke in Mcgregors short impressive run
No thanks I don't want McGregor fighting anyone other than a legit top 5 lightweight. Aldo looked awful against Volkanovski last fight. He did nothing for 3 rds and let Volkanovski easily outwork him with volume then acted surprised that he didn't get the decision. In my mind McGregor really hasn't proven himself as an elite fighter above 145 and I don't want him fighting easier fights like Aldo, Diaz etc etc when we all know that those guys in 2019 can not beat top 5 lightweights themselves. Prove that you're a legit top fighter at 155 Conor.
Seemed like he threw that fight to me. He didn't even put in an effort to win. I heard that UFC re-signed him or got him to sign for an extension. If he's going to put in half assed effort in fights, I'd rather him retire.
