Interestingly, the only man to share the ring with both of them (Jack Sharkey) stated with confidence that if Dempsey and Louis were to meet in a phone box, he'd bet his bottom dollar on Dempsey walking out. Have never agreed with him, and hey, what do I know about boxing compared to Jack Sharkey? But still, got to stick to my guns and say I'm backing Louis here. Dempsey was an amazing four-round fighter and Louis was susceptible early on, particularly to getting hit with the right over the top of his jab. But I think an early blowout is Dempsey's only chance. I'm a lot less impressed with Dempsey's technical skills than most others and I think Louis is in a different league to him in that regard, and just as great a pure puncher. You mention someone getting 'demolished', which is obviously highly possible, but Louis can win this fight long, methodically and stylishly if he wants to. By the sixth or seventh round I could see Louis walking Dempsey on to every jab and combination he threw. Louis could be made to struggle against canny movements and back foot speed, which Dempsey doesn't really excel in. Also, while Louis' chin could be a little tender, his powers of recovery were exceptional, as he showed against Buddy Baer in particular. Even if Dempsey hurts or decks Louis, I don't think it's a guarantee that he closes the show. Louis almost every time. Just a different class of fighter to Dempsey, in my opinion. I'll take the Brown Bomber by TKO around the 11th round here.
Dempsey KO in a spectacular battle. Jack is a bad style match up for Joe IMO. For what it's worth, Mcvey always picked Dempsey too.
Jack walked in with his hands low and swung shots from his hips. https://www.rte.ie/centuryireland//images/uploads/article-images/Ed156-Dempsey-v-Willard-LoC.jpg https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/...863/shape/mentalfloss/GettyImages-3378890.jpg I could see Joe pasting him out with a sequence of precisely landed hooks and uppercuts.
I don't bet against Louis in any fight. Dempsey would be the best fighter he ever fought and had right style to trouble him but I still think that Louis would land more and stop Dempsey after brutal fight.
My first thought was Louis, then I began thinking I don't know if Joe could control the distance with Dempsey. I'd say they'd split 2 fights, that close
Marciano wasn't at his peak in Louis fight and I don't consider this an important fight in Louis resume to be honest. Dempsey may be overrated, but he's better than Walcott.
How? He was highly inconsistent and his resume is clearly weaker. Yeah, he beat Charles but in many tries and he lost to Louis and Marciano. Dempsey beat better fighters than Walcott and he lost far less often. I always felt that Jack's resume is overrated but he has better consistency, longevity and better main wins than Walcott. What is the case for Walcott here?
