Was he one of the P4P best in boxing during the late 80's? He had almost back to back wins over a undefeated Miguel Lora and then Gaby Canizalesm two extremely good fighters. Can't fault a win over Wilfredo Vazquez either. Things seemed to fall apart in the early 90's, though I have no idea why.

    Thoughts on Perez?

He was living the Olivares lifestyle once he won the title and probably started struggling to make weight by the end of his reign.Never really looked like the same fighter after he moved up in weight.

He had the same well rounded, offense orientated textbook approach that most of the '60s and '70s mexican Bantams had, only added to freakish height and reach advantages.Great accuracy, well-balanced with good workrate and threw some of the best combinations you're likely to see at the weight.

On the downside, he was somewhat mechanical, tended to only use his jab as a rangefinder and wasn't always the best defensively.Lifestyle saw him lose sharpness fight by fight.Like a Nunn or Camacho he was only really at the top of his game for a brief period.

Head to Head he would be hell for most of the pure boxing\counterpuncher types, or anyone with a lower workrate than him that lacks the power to get his respect.Don't think he would have done as well with the more offensively orientated big punchers that could equal or better him in skill.

A fight with Canizales at the time woould have been very interesting as long as he came in sharp for it.

Do you think he was chinny, or was that strictly a by product of of struggling with weight/degrading in general, or the move up in weight? The one round demo job Espinosa did on him is hard for me to understand even though I've watched it a few times now.

He seemed to have a very solid chin at Bantam.I'd say it was mostly due to moving up in weight and general significant decline.

Vazquez was an excellent puncher so it's no surprise an off-form fighter even if normally durable could get hurt by him and he was finished by the Espinosa bout.

Bump. Im going to start watching more from this guy. Been wanting to see if anyone else knows more about Jibaro. From what I can see he somewhat reminds me of Jhonny Gonzalez with that skinny frame, long range, excellent power and good textbook skills although fragile. Anyone who can convincingly beat Miguel Lora in his prime has to be a pretty solid fighter

I saw him at the Forum several times, could never believe that he made 118. He was a hard drinking man, something he didn't do on his way up but took up enthusiastically after he won the title.

Yes, he was a pound for pound top 10 for awhile. His peak was short, though

Here’s Raul Perez in a grueling battle against Lucio Lopez. Great action fight. He really was a bit tall for the weight.

And here’s an interesting article on Jibaro Perez from LA Times in 1990.

Bump. More opinions and knowledge of Jibaro would be much appreciated! It's pretty hard to find some of his fights on YT now and his fight against Lora was recently removed.
Still hard to believe how tall he was for his weight. He was like the Bantamweight version of Paul Williams. But he looked like he had the goods before he fell off the rails once he became less dedicated and started to move up in weight.

You should download bouts you like before they're removed. I learnt the hard way with midget Wolgast.

Bump. Flo, I just uploaded his bout with Miguel Lora. Judging by my previous youtube searches, I'm somehow the first to do this. Enjoy.
