Given he has served up some dross, he seems to be putting on some class shows at present. Denzel Bentley vs Kelcie Ball has been added to Royal Albert Hall. Leaving us with; York Hall Zak Chelli vs Kody Davies Dec Spelman vs Shakkan Pitters Brad Fost vs Lucien Reid Royal Albert Hall Denzel Bentley vs Kelcie Ball Leeds Arena Zelfa Barrett vs Jordon McCorry Lyndon Arthur vs Emmanuel Anim Troy Williamson vs Navid Mansouri Some really interesting fights and good step ups. Frank certainly seems to be giving TBA and TBC less runouts of late.
TBH I think in today’s market, it’s all about clicks and trends on Twitter and Instagram etc that’s helps to break people through promotional and this is usually more organic. For example, if Yarde wins next week by KO I would expect that to break him through to the mainstream audience on social media rather than just boxing fans.
Yarde should be known to mainstream already. He's had big sponsorship deals with Adidas & maximuscle of which the latter used to be shown in the middle of sky fight nights. He's unbeaten and although we know he hasn't fought no one, mainstream don't know that. Yarde should be far better known already than he actually is. To be fair to it was probably tunde who got yarde those sponsorships, I reckon he would if done a far better job than Frank had he had the accessibility Frank has.
He has said that BT are going to be supporting more small hall shows to give the younger lads a bigger platform.
Exactly what I thought. I watch a lot of boxing (IMO) and there’s names on there I don’t know. It’s not going to capture the public’s imagination.
There are clearly people on here who exist in some sort of boxing bubble and have zero awareness regarding how well certain fighters are known to the general public. It makes me wonder if they ever even mention boxing to people they know who don't seem to follow the sport closely, but seriously; Anthony Yarde feels like a guy who should a proper name and he isn't. That raises questions concerning his promoter.
Yarde has sponsorship deals, but I don’t know how much of an actual marketing budget gets allocated to him, it’s probably next to nothing. Obviously AJ is a British superstar who has a dedicated marketing team behind him, which is the extreme, but in the lead up to his fights you get bombarded on Instagram etc with the paid adverts from lucazade and Under armour etc. The other issue I think, is that Yarde has only really fought foreign imports who don’t speak English, so the actual promotional material based on his fights have been flat as a pancake. It’s a real shame he didn’t get to fight Buglioni as they wanted as that would have been of interest to the public. As I said earlier, if Yarde wins by KO he will catapult into mainstream.
Why should he though? Wasn't a star amateur and hasn't fought anyone. Name someone who is well known with those credentials. If anything Frank has done a good job getting him known.
IF yarde does Kovalev next weekend, then his career progression has been managed perfectly. Hearns fighters have had the benefit of being on the same shows as AJ
It won't be enough for some people if he wins though, because his instagram followers are down and football hooligans don't know who he is so he may as well not bother according to that logic.
