    1. 10-9 Holmes
    2. 10-9 Holmes
    3. 10-9 Witherspoon
    4. 10-9 Holmes
    5. 10-9 Holmes
    6. 10-9 Holmes
    7. 10-9 Witherspoon
    8. 10-9 Holmes
    9. 10-9 Witherspoon
    10. 10-9 Holmes
    11. 10-9 Witherspoon
    12. 10-9 Holmes
    116-112 Holmes

Watched the fight again to rescore, which is reflected above. As a teenager in 1983 thought it was a draw, or Witherspoon win. Attribute that to surprise at how well Witherspoon did (had little knowledge of him), age, and with 1 year of amateur boxing experience at the time was certain about everything :nut
At the time had thought Chuck Hassett was an idiot, but am closer to his score than would have expected.
Was a great fight, Tim had a style that would always give Larry trouble, and Larry had cleary expected a softer touch. Witherspoon went on to show it was not a one night fluke. Similar to Weaver, picked as a easy defense (probably) turned out to be a legit top flight fighter.:bbb

Just watched it now, and had it 116-112 for Holmes.
I scored rounds 4, 6, 7, and 9 for Witherspoon, the rest for Holmes.

Agreed. That definitely didn't feel like anything remotely approaching a 10-8 round. Holmes finished that round strong, and I think Witherspoon had emptied his tank a little bit. It did look as if Larry might have been 1 well placed punch away from being dropped, but instead Holmes turned the tables.

I had Larry two points in the lead, and a commanding lead at that. Tim did a terrific job, he had a great fight plan...but, like Carl Williams, he just didn't do quite enough.

The ninth round of that fight is one of the greatest examples of Championship heart and courage I've ever seen. This would be the first fight I'd offer up as proof of Larry's greatness (especially significant because he was at either at the very end of or past his prime).

Larry never looked more like the Champion than in that round imo. Only Holyfield and Ali had as much heart in the past five or six decades.

My scorecard looked exactly like scartissue above posted his, except that I had the 2 EVEN rounds slightly even if by the slightest of margines for Tim, so I had it a DRAW! The fight was that close.

Even though I thought Tim lost a close one, this was his career best performance in my view.

It would have helped if Page hadn't lost to Bey, who Holmes beat. If most felt he clearly won then the rematch wasn't really necessary. And most do.

Also Holmes had already faced the best in the division at that point and would later take on Spinks twice, Williams and Tyson.

    I had it 115-113 to Holmes last time. I gave him rounds 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 11. Witherspoon took 3, 4, 7, 9 and 12.

Never really understood why this one gets painted as a robbery, while people are relatively quiet about the decision Holmes got against Williams, which in my view was definitely more dubious. I could see why someone might have given this to Witherspoon by a hair (nothing more), but I've scored it two or three times and always had Larry winning by a couple or so. Obviously the 118-111 card was a joke, but I think Holmes pulled it out and outworked Tim for the most part. Witherspoon contributed to his own downfall a little with his usual lackadaisicalness; he had Holmes hurt in the ninth, then followed it up by barely throwing a punch in the tenth. Just didn't quite pull the trigger enough for me.

On the other hand, I really couldn't give Holmes anything more than a draw against Williams.

Holmes was supposed to fight Page well before Page ever fought Bey. Page and Witherspoon fought for Holmes's vacant WBC title.

The Witherspoon/Holmes fight was clearly a close fight. Holmes showed great heart to comeback from being badly rocked. But, only someone with his head in the sand would think it didn't affect Holmes's mindset.

He fought a stiff like Frank and an no hoper novice (10 fights) Frazier after the Witherspoon scare. Then, refused to fight Page and was stripped.

Holmes made a decision not to fight the best the division had to offer after the Witherspoon scare.

This is exactly why Holmes got underrated!
