This thread is pure gold. Comparing a man who’s style is drowning in red flags to one of the four kings. What’s next, let’s all compare a prime Mike Tyson to Amir Khan.
To be fair I don’t think Wilder’s been hit that much, he showed balls against Ortiz when he was hurt and rode it out. I’ve warmed to Wilder like a lot of people in the last year or so. Although I still think some of his fundamentals leave a lot to be desired, there’s no doubting that power, and that makes him exciting, what a heavyweight should be.
So who is Tyson in this comparison, Wilder or Hearns? Because both Wilder and Hearns are closer to Tyson than Khan is to any of the other three. Wilder's got nine straight WBC title defenses. Tyson had nine straight WBC defenses, too. Hearns had 48 KOs. Tyson had 44 KOs. Wilder has 40 and counting. Of course, Wilder was never knocked out like Tyson and Khan or Hearns. And Wilder never quit, like Tyson and Khan did. Don't act like Hearns was superman. The aura around Hearns rubbed off by the time Hearns was 23, and he was getting cut up and had to get on his bicycle to go the distance with guys like Ernie Singletary. When Hearns was clearly bigger and stronger than his comp at welter, he dominated most. When he started fighting guys more his own size, Steward had to be more cautious about the guys Hearns fought because he didn't want Hearns to get in wars. When Hearns got in wars, he tended to lose.
This is a case of experience. Hearns was more rounded and had a more varied set of punches, which meant he would not be outboxed. Hearns had 163 amateur fights. Like someone said. Lennox was more like Hearns than Wilder..
He moved up and had to acclimate. He beat Virgil Hill at 175. He could move up.. Wilder is no Hearns. He never will be. He is feasting on a weak heavyweight division.
When Hearns was in wars he tended to lose? That is not true. Define what a war is? He got in scraps with Weston, he won. Leonard he lost. Hagler he lost. Dewitt. sort of a war. he won.. Roldan he won, Kinchen he won.. Leonard 2 draw.. Barkley lost. Delgado win..
Let me add this. Every fighter has a weakness. I always thought Hearns biggest weakness was not his chin, but his inability to control his urge to swing for the fences to get a knockout. He liked to please the public and that made him go for knockouts, which left him open to counters. He was his own enemy. Had he been more defensive, Thomas Hearns would have been less exciting but had more wins.
Wilder is without a doubt a top 5 puncher at hw. I already made a thread pointing out the hypocrisy in the lists people make having guys like tua or baer or Ruddock on their lists but not including wilder.
