I don't think either of them is a great fighter. Not what I would call a great. Kovalev lost at times when he should not have, and does not have the wins to be a great and Ward -does not have the wins. He is a hall of fame fighter, but not a great. What is the criteria for great? Top 250? Then maybe. When you look at great fighter lists even the top 75 are not great fighters and much better than Ward is..
Of course he is. He was "the man" for many years, his nearest rival wouldn't fight him, and he's still a top dog in a division which has never been so stacked. You'd also fancy his chances against a lot of top fighters from yesteryear @ LHW.
Can you? LHW is one of the deepest divisions ever. If he's squeezing in somewhere in that division its top 25
He is as is GGG, both legacies have been tarnished by corruption, GGG to a much larger extent. If boxing was a fair sport, both guys would be undefeated as it stands. It seem Russian, Eastern European fighters always get ****ed over the most.
My top 24, with Galindez at 25 and Kovalev at 26. For résumé. 1. Ezzard Charles 2. Archie Moore 3. Gene Tunney 4&5 Tommy Loughran 5&4. Maxie Rosenbloom 6. Micheal Spinks 7. Bob Foster 8. Philadelphia Jack O'Brian 9. Jimmy Bivins 10. Lloyd Marshall 11. Roy Jones Jr 12. Billy Conn 13. Tommy Gibbons 14. Harold Johnson 15. John Henry Lewis 16. Dariusz Michalczewski 17. Gus Lesnevich 18. Dwight Muhammad Qawi 19. Young Stribling 20. Jack Dillion 21. Mathew Saad Muhammad 22. Virgil Hill 23. Jimmy Slattery 24. Antonio Tarver
Without question His accomplishments are incredible He beat who many consider an ATG in Andre Ward in their first fight. Then you look at the champions and legends he's dethroned how can anyone argue that he is not?
Well said and are my exact sentiments. The cleverly beat down was one of my favourite fights considering most of Cleverly's fans throught he was fighting a nobody at that time and Kovalev ended up making Nathan look like the nobody with his effortless performance.
No. If he unifies the titles, we will revisit his career again. Right now he's a long distance from that finish line.
That depends on your standard for an all time great. I do think he has done enough to make the boxing hall of fame, not in his first try or as the class headliner, but eventually. You're correct, he won the first Ward fight. Krusher isn't what he was, but might be able to score a big win before he hands them up. A fight with Canelo would be very interesting.
You have greats, all time greats and legends. Kov is a great fighter. Can he travel through time and beat the likes of Moore, Charles, Foster, or Spinks, Conn, Qawi, Saad Muhammad, prime Hop and Jones Jr and many others? I need more from Kovalev.
