Both in top form. Is Weaver the type of raw slugger the Jerry Quarry typically ate up? Or is Weaver's power and determination too much for Quarry? Mike was more resilient than Earnie Shavers. A little more measured but also open to be hit. Jerry Quarry has an edge in quickness and a better counter puncher. That snappy left hook could get anyone's attention. How does this one go?
I'd take Quarry here. Possibly a later type stoppage. Quarry was a very good fighter at his best. He'd ride out the odd bomb from Weaver.
Their careers in California somewhat intersected one another's. Quarry sparred with Ken Norton and Norton sparred with Weaver. I wonder if Quarry and Weaver had ever sparred one another? Quarry would've been the veteran and much more experienced fighter at the time. There weren't that many boxing gyms in California and the pool of available heavyweights to spar with would've been limited.
I don't think Mike Weaver was committed to boxing as much as he could have been in his early years. Being around Ken Norton helped him a lot. If nothing else Kenny Norton was always in shape.
Very tough fight for both. I give edge to Quarry to win by late stoppage or hard fought decision. Out of a trilogy, I think Weaver would win one of the fights, though.
Tate was a big, talented heavyweight. At the time he was highly regarded. Weaver cracked his chin though and did win that fight. View his challenge of Larry Holmes an all-time great. Mike was pretty impressive in a losing effort. He had Larry in alot of trouble.
Two of my favorite heavyweights. Both were wildly inconsistent. But at their best I think Quarry beats Weaver by decision.
Quarry would win another phyrric victory. A cruiserweight, even though winning, taking punches from a heavyweight, doesn't fare well in the long run.
