I've seen some photos and random information about Fitzsimmons sparring with Jeannette. Is it true? Does anybody know anything about it?
Cyberboxingzone has them boxing an exhibition in London on May 25, 1909. But I dug up a report on that event, and it says that Fitzsimmons boxed "Corporal Sunshine" while Jeanette boxed a man named Sid Doyle. CBZ also mentions an exhibition in Paris, but they don't give a date, they just say it was sometime in 1909. Couldn't find anything about it, but it may well have happened - as you know, there is a pic of them posing in the ring together which must have come from somewhere.
Fitz gave an exhibition withTommy Burns in Australia in1909 prior to his fight with Bill Lang. Adam Pollack has nothing on a Jeannette exhibition and nothing about Paris.
Spesh was Grantie's mentor, taught him everything he knows about boxing history. Then Spesh realised that Grantie was a hater and booted him from his group. He's been sore about it ever since and occasionally has little digs at Spesh on this forum and he's mentioned him here because Spesh is a bit of an expert on Joe Jeannette. That's about the long and short of it, isn't it Harald?
Interestingly, in this photo Fitz doesn't look that much smaller than Joe. He had skinny legs but his upper body is comparable to heavyweights. I doubt that he weighed less than LHW, probably more than that.
I believe this would have been later in his career when he might well have added weight ,as most of us are prone to do!
Yeah, most likely but he still looks very fit and he probably weighed around 180 lbs. Yet many say that he's too small to compete against Rocky or Dempsey.
I think his big problem against them would be punch resistance. Dempsey and Rocky both had really good chins, Fitz was a bit easy to hurt at heavyweight.
Yes, but he wasn't easy to stop. He took punches from Maher, Sharkey, Choynski, Ruhlin and he beat them all. Even Jeffries needed quite a bit time to stop him. Fitzsimmons usually won slugging against more durable fighters. Maybe he wouldn't beat them, but he'd have more than a chance.
Fitz was certainly a much more clinical finisher if he could hurt them. If Dempsey got reckless, Fitz would have a shot, I think Rocky's more methodical style would give him less hope. I certainly wouldn't expect an easy night for either.
Stumbled on another reference to this, but now I'm just more confused than before. This clipping from the Spokane Press, June 30th 1909, says that Jeanette and Fitzsimmons did box and even includes that pic which you find when you google the subject (sorry the quality's so bad). Apparently the third man in the ring is Charlie Mitchell. https://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y25/Soldeed/Jeanette Fitzsimmons Spokane Press June 30 1909.png But it contradicts the article which I found previously in British paper The Globe, from May 26th, which says that they were at the same event but boxed other people. https://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y25/Soldeed/Jeanette Fitzsimmons The Globe May 26 1909.png Could just be different events of course, except they both say they were at a benefit for Jem Mace.
