No myth regarding Dempsey. The greatest fighters and experts from that time who watched him line in action rated him very very highly.

    Sam Langford
“Jack Dempsey is the greatest fighter I have ever seen.”

Just that statement alone should give you great pause even if you ignorantly discount all other expert opinion.

He could fight but if you compare him to the champions that came along later he pails in comparison.
He often is included in the top 10 or even 5 heavyweights. That is laughable.
A good bit of Dempsey is myth. Nostalgia can be a terrible thing if you take it too far.

Based on his undisguised hatred of Bruno. I heard a rumor he lost his pants betting everything on a Bruno win against Lewis.

    Jacks back! woohoo.
that may be the case, but what is true is that Bruno certainly would have been in favour against this kind of opposition.

But I respect Antie, he looks from his avatar like a decent chap who just stopped to help you out with directions.

Ha, I prefer his old pic with that street corner drug dealer looking guy on it .The kind of shifty looking guy who after shaking your hand, you gotta check that your ring is still on your finger and your watch still on your wrist.

No ATG hwt champion chosen as such by his peers is overrated. Period. When you have Sam Langford stating Dempsey was the greatest fighter he ever saw ask yourself whether you 100 plus years later are in a better position than an expert watching live from ringside. Add to it this praise was in the vast majority. Think Stillman, Arcel, Bimstein, Fleischer just to start.

If you chose yourself the word is delusional.

The OP never said anything about overrated champions only overrated heavyweights, and as heavyweights go Dempsey is far from overrated regardless of his championship run.

It wasn't much of a run to be honest. Alot of hype but the quality just isn't there for him to be mentioned with true greats like Joe Louis, Ali, Frazier, Tyson,Holyfield, Lewis even Liston has a better claim to greatness when you put aside the myth.
Pretitle wins? Beating big oafs like Fred Fulton and Carl Morris don't exactly say too much other than he can tee off on uncoordinated, unskilled, punching bags.
    Hence the overated part.

There is no “myth” regarding Dempsey. You have the greatest most highly regarded fighters, trainers and historians that testify to his greatness as a fighter. One of the greatest talents ever to enter a boxing ring.

Sugar Valuev Saint Primo's successor was clearly the superior son of Zeus.

There is about as much substance in this post as there was in Dempsey's title reign. So much bluster.
