I don't see how anyone could have backed him last night considering the pathetic effort he put in against Pulev(age was a factor in many picking him in that one). I backed him there and wasn't making the same mistake twice. Povetkin is in his twilight years but he's still a capable operator and probably top 10, something Hughie will never be.
He's a bit of a strange one Hughie, he's too good for domestic level and can (sort of) hold his own at world level but due to his negatively/being too cautious he will always lose on points. He's turning into a durable gate keeper as his chin is excellent but he possesses no real power to trouble opponents. I think he's found his level now and don't see it ever changing despite him being relatively young for an heavyweight.
Fury should drop down to women's division and challenge Clarissa Shields. That's the only way I see him winning a title.
he's only 24? mike tyson was cleaning out the division when he was 20! no excuses for hughie. if has been training since he was 11, 13 years on he should have a LOT of experience by now.
He's like the new Kevin Johnson, very difficult to hurt and competent enough, but little threat if you're at all decent.
Well, it's a bit unfair on the lad to say he's useless... He stays in there with everyone, he just lacks in area's, shall we say! Lol Needs a bit of spite in his game and how he hasn't developed a good shot, just any good power shot is beyond me and I unfortunately now think it's the best thing tyson done was to leave Peter. Tough kid is hughie, I just don't know what Peter is doing with him for him to be lacking any sort of aggression or authority In there. Weird really,I dont get it,maybe he isn't cut out for aggression and just fights because it's what was expected of him.. fek knows, It's a strange one.
Very, very good points. I'm definitely one of those people saying "Well, he is very young." Despite saying that, I knew he would still likely never amount to anything. However, I didn't quite know why I felt that way. That video spelled out the very obvious point I was overlooking: The trend just isn't there for Hughie. He hasn't improved at all over these years.
I never quite got the hype with him to begin with (not that there was a huge amount). He just seemed very apathetic in his approach to the game. No matter what age you are you can't expect great things with an attitude like that.
I don't think there really was any hype for him outside of his actual family. He was never that good and he's only known because of his cousin.
Even if he did bulk up,he would still need to sit down on his shots.,He's not the brightest of lads and he gave the game away when he likened his elusive, running, hugging style to that of Ali. He thinks he's at his best at range but his problem is the judges don't agree with him.Lol you can see him scratching his head after the fight as he must genuinely think he does enough to win rounds, truth is it doesn't look like he's trying to win by knockout or even hurt his opponent's.
I can't see him faring any better at cruiser weight either? All those Eastern Europeans who can all box would be a nightmare for him.
I can answer this one,its the old case you cant put your drive into someone else. In this case its Peter wanting to fight in there and Hughie trying to please his dad. In my own case ,my father wanted to be a fighter while young ,quit at 19 and 0 but then took up dancing at 40. (Won hundreds of competitions ) I wanted to start fighting AT 38 ( Officially , I had 3 first rnd knockouts in my 20' s) and had the opposite mentality for my own kid who is encouraged to fight. ( I never was ) However hes in a up hill battle with me more ,if he doesn't want it more then I do at age 16 I wont let him fight....theres the difference...Peter was teaching Hughie as a young kid ,he seems to want it more then his son and it really shows with other things if you know what to look at. Simple as that.
I'm not sure Hughie doesn't want it. I guess he does. Well, maybe he just wants to be a champion, a famous and successful fighter. Anyway, he's not good at it.
