I don't know what the firms ended up doing here, it's an interesting one, but they should honor any bets on a Martinez win.

Once the ref declared him the winner the traders will have settled the market and funds released to any winning bets.

It's one of those rare scenarios where the bookies will end up losing out.

I think of it similar to horse racing where they pay first past the post e.g a horse wins the race, but 10 minutes later there is a reversal of 1st and 2nd as the replays show that the winner obstructed / impeded 2nd along the way. They then pay out on the amended result also. Only in this instance they will be paying out on Martinez and potentially voiding other bets if they decide to settle on the NC ruling. If it were my decision I would give a free bet equivalent to the stake of any bets placed on Edwards.

I agree with most of what you say although not all bookies pay first past the post and those that do do it as a promotional thing.

In this case PP have clearly hidden behind their rule that they use 'official result published by the official governing body', the fact that they settled before this will mean nothing to them.

What makes it all the more annoying is that you see them offering 'justice refunds' on all manner of things ie goals ruled out by VAR etc and they forever tweet which losing bets from the weekend shall we settle as winners blah blah blah but in truth this is a prime example of when they should at least make some sort of compromise.

I don't like the weight talk though. Rematch first, moving up after if that's what they're planning.

Sunny is a good lad, behind all his brash messing about he seems very grounded and decent, basically he's the opposite of his brother, even in the ring, Sunny is really good to watch.

I liked him as an amateur but when he was trash talking as a pro went off him. Like his honesty there tho, hopefully he concentrates on being himself now rather than a gobshite.

Big fan of Martinez. Everything I love about a pro fighter. A true hard case throwing bombs. V thick with the final punch “have one more mate” !!!

I checked on Twitter and Paddy / Betfair did simply void the entire market, which would mean the poster who cashed his £230 will now have that as a minus figure on his account.

I noticed Skybet voided all markets but did pay out on Martinez KO method of victory.

If I had bet on the Mexican to win and had my bet void I would feel hard done by, and those who bet on Edwards and got their money back can count themselves very lucky - just as Edwards himself was to retain his belt - as for all intents and purposes he lost the fight and lucked out on a technicality.

Here’s the rules on Paddy’s site:

    • Should an official or unofficial sanctioning body overturn a fight decision based on an appeal, suspension, lawsuit, drug testing result or any other fighter sanction, this will not be recognised for betting purposes.
So, hypothetically, if the correct procedure had have occurred after the ref called the fight, and Edwards appealed the result (and Sulaiman makes the same decision but a week later), then the NC would not have been recognised for betting purposes and Edwards bettors would not have had a leg to stand on.

Anyone who bet on Martinez should contact IBAS in this case as there’s a strong chance they would rule in their favour.

I was absolutely gutted when he beat Selby but then I had to give this kid a proper look and I liked what I saw. I told my mates that he'd beat Edwards, I put money on it, I told my girlfriend that it would be over by 5 at the most, this kid is as tough as they come and he's relentless. Like you, I'm a fan, I like that he's avenged his one defeat too, and the fact that he fought in prison to keep fit, a real bad ass.

    Oh dear.

But at the same time fair play to him if he has the rematch.

Think you've only quoted half the rule there mate, they pretty much cover every base, and leave so many grey areas , in that same section you quote they also say -

Results are not official for betting purposes until verified by officials at the fighting venue.

    and

In the event of a 'no contest' being declared, all bets will be made void

As for IBAS it's not quite as easy as just contacting IBAS , you need to have gone through the complete complaints procedure with the company concerned first, had confirmation that the dispute is deadlocked and then and only then can you even begin the IBAS route.

Lets not forget IBAS is funded by the bookmakers too , although it does cost the bookmaker a fair bit each time they have a case referred to IBAS , usually they would settle in some way long before this, although if they haven't by the time IBAS are involved you can bet your bottom dollar they are more than confident of winning (but it still costs them), It would cost them more than the £230 that's for sure.

I’m doubtful he takes it but if he does I think it would do well as a headline fight on a normal Saturday show. Martinez was beating the **** out of him but does anyone know how many times he has done 12 rounds. He could have ended up punching himself out.

Remember Crolla v Barroso? Barroso was pummelling him early on and looked like he would win and then gassed out. If Edwards makes the right adjustments he could take it long.

Either way I’d like to see it.

I tried quoting the entire rule at first but couldn’t post it as it included the name of a competitor site which they use for settling purposes, so had to leave it out.

But yeah, I agree with what you’re saying, the bookies have enough T & C’s which allow them to rule whichever way they please when there’s any grey area in such a case.

I had no dog in the race anyway, just find these controversial betting disputes interesting as a neutral.

As far as I can see he's done 8 rounds 3 times, the last being over 2 years ago, he did 6 rounds early last year. Definitely food for thought but I don't think Edwards has enough about his game to hold him off and by the 4th or 5th I think Martinez will have done enough damage to ensure that this fight doesn't go on for much longer.

I think we could be seeing a star in the making, apparently he's very friendly and charismatic outside of the ring, he's come from nothing and he's exciting to watch, which, funnily enough, if you look at Edwards Insta that's exactly how he's trying to portray himself.
