Wasn't too interested in continuing, Willard simply did not motivate me sufficiently, a bio on him recently came out, and I had several folks beg me to do Dempsey, which I could get up for given that he was a really entertaining dominant type fighter.
I had a question about this. Figured this would be as good a place as any to ask. So there is a FightFilmsGuy version online showing rounds 1-6 and 9-10. Which does seem like the most complete version online. This content is protected There is also the Big Fights/Jim Jacobs/ESPN version that shows rounds 1-6-9-10 that everyone is familiar with. This content is protected However, in the Big Fights version of Dempsey-Tunney I, round 10 is clearly NOT round 10. Tunney goes back to his corner and sits down and his corner man waves a towel to cool him off. In fact, the last 30 seconds (maybe more) of Round 10 in the Big Fights version is clearly the end of Round 4 in the FightFilmsGuy version. The beginning of round 4 in the Fight Films Guy version (where Dempsey charges Tunney) is clearly different than the beginning of Round 10 in the Big Fights version, but at some point Big Fights added the end of round 4 to the round they are calling round 10. I haven't studied the entire Round 10 in the Big Fights version to see if other parts of the round match up to other rounds in the Fight Films Guy version, but FightFilmsGuy clearly has the real round 10, because both corners enter the ring at the end of the fight ... and it matches the end of the fight in this other version which just shows before the fight and after. This content is protected So I was wondering if the beginning of Round 10 in the Big Fights version is actually a part of round 7 or 8? Has anyone bothered to look at the beginning of Round 10 in the Big Fights version to see if if was taken from rounds 1-6? It's odd there are so many different versions of the same fight and people can't agree on which rounds are which. And nobody seems to ever bring it up.
Adam, I don't think that there has been enough in-depth research done on Jack Dempsey and his boxing career. In addition, I believe that the Dempsey autobiographies and biographies that I have read are inaccurate or have a number of glaring omissions. None of those autobiographies and biographies mention that A. J. Auerbach, a Salt Lake City businessman, managed Dempsey for a time. Yet I found that Dempsey would show up to watch bouts of A. J.'s son, Herman, in the Los Angeles area during the late 1920s. The same autobiographies and biographies contain very inaccurate information about Dempsey's first wife, Maxine Cates. She didn't die in a dancehall fire in Juarez during the 1920s or was fifteen years older than Jack. It turns out that she was a year younger than Jack, later got married to a man named Don Smith Devin during the 1920s, and worked as a beautician in Kansas City, Missouri before dying of double leukemia during 1939. There is information about the marriage of Jack and Maxine on the FamilySearch genealogical website. I found a document of Maxine's marriage to Don Smith Devin in digital form and a copy of her death certificate in digital form. In regards to Jack Dempsey's knockout loss to Fireman Jim Flynn, the description of that event in various Dempsey biographies and autobiographies is different from what is found in contemporary news reports. According to news reports, Dempsey was flattened and counted out, but according to the Dempsey biographies and autobiographies, the bout was stopped. One version has Dempsey's brother, Bernie, throwing in the towel with Dempsey protesting to Bernie about it. - Chuck Johnston
The best rumor going was that Maxine was actually killed in that Juarez fire because she had run out of the money Jacobs had given her to be quiet about Jack's thrown fights and was starting to get mouthy about it.
