What was the hardest punch Ali ever took?

I think when you get hit like that you don't feel it. If you can feel it then your ok.

 

In the heat of many battles and then looking back over a long period of time to his career, he could well be mistaken.

 

Holmes was cracking the hell out of Ali in the last two rounds...though I do think he carried him to some extent.

Once again I'm lost as to the round THAT Foreman uppercut landed (have to watch the fight again). Ali was clinching...he talked about it at length in his book. And yeah, George landed flush with that uppercut. Too flush.

Well, DavidC77 does have an interesting, practical idea there. So I guess Ali saying Shavers hit him hardest would make sense then, as it's hard to imagine him having been hit harder after that fight, a very late-career titular defense.

The Shavers thing rings true for me. Ali's eyes were going pretty wild a few times in that fight, at one point it looked like he was getting knocked around the ring.

Just when you think about the myriad of punches Ali took in his career, it would probably be difficult for him to pick the actual hardest one out.
But if he said it was Shavers, then it was Shavers!!

 

I just saw that video (it was a Phil Donahue type of show from I think the early 80s...maybe just before Holmes) a few weeks ago for the first time. The audience asked and Ali said it without hesitation "that would be Earnie Shavers".

People here, including me, are very impressed by the rights of Lewis, Foreman, Liston, Louis, Wilder. They were all remarkable punchers. But none of them had that nuclear bomb. Nuh-uh.

 

Had to be some of those body punches Rocky landed against him in their film.

 

Well, I’m absolutely gutted about that.
