Mills Lane or Richard Steele: who was the best?

Lane allowed a fighter to continue after biting their opponent's ear, to the point that the second time it happened the fighter got a chunk of it off; and even then Lane was confused as to what to do...

It was a myth that Lane was a no nonsense sheriff type character.

Steele on the other hand was generally top notch, who did not bottle the big decisions even when it cost the smart boxing fancy a penny or two with the bookies.

It's not a myth. Lane took points away from Tyson for hitting Ruddock low. Don King was incensed because of it. It didn't make any difference to Lane. Steele on the other hand would have probably just keep warning him.

I thought Chavez vs Taylor was a horrible decision so definitely Lane for me.

 

His trainer (Duva) admitted he might have swallowed a pint of blood and he had a broken jaw. Steele saved Taylor, as he was not the timekeeper, and judged he was unable to continue. He was probably right with hindsight. And this comes from one of those who knew people who lost money on the fight.

 

Taylor had a broken eye socket as well. Julio could have run him over with a Pick up truck and he would've been better off.

 

I found Mr ‘Punch and get out’ Steele’s style of jumping in as soon as the fighters got up close irritating. Let the fighters fight on the inside or out of a clinch but Steele just jumped in far too quickly and too often for my liking.

 

I liked Lane, he kept control of the fight and when things went outside the norm he handled them well. Stern.
