Fitzsimmons for sure, Corbett probably too. Sharkey and Ruhlin are also better fighters, but it'd depend on duration. We don't know how well would Chuvalo fare with much smaller gloves and a lot of grappling. No, I don't but I believe in his resume and in fights reports which doesn't make him look like a superhuman. And you base this on what? One round of poor footage with hurt Ruhlin? We don't have anything relevant on the film about Jeffries. I love how you don't care about any second handed reports, but you base your opinion on nothing. We don't know how Jeffries fought in his prime, so how do you know that he would be weak in later eras?
To be charitable it might be a half-truth that would be fully honest if you substitute the clause "for fear of breaking my hand". Given the small gloves at the time, I might not scoff at this outright.
Were hand wraps fairly common back in Jeffries’ days? I’m just wondering if him not wearing wraps would have been considered out of the norm for his time, or if a lot of fighters went without them. I’d be interested to know what the hand wraps were actually like back then too.
Fitz wore as much as he was allowed because his hands got so bad. I think Jeffries was pretty unique in not wearing wraps.
Picking your own data and omitting others. How noble and classy of you. Jeffries averaged 220 pounds in his title fights. He’s has an inch in hight and nearly 6 inches in reach over Chuvalo.
The NY Times a primary source as the fight took place in NY gave a full round by round report If was even going into the 23rd round or if you score knock down 10-8 maybe Jeffries had a slight lead. Historian / author Adam Pollack said it was anyone’s fight going into the 23 round. Facts for a guy who only picks stuff for his agendas. The ring in which they fought was 25x25. For those who understand the math that is a full 225 square feet above the standard 20x20. Advantage Corbett.
Jeffries was 6 foot even. For his serious title fight, not his joke outings with Finnegan and Munro for which he didn't really train or need to,he weighed the following; Fitz 1. 206lbs Sharkey . 215lbs Corbett1.218lbs Ruhlin.218lbs Fitz2. 219lbs Corbett 2.220lbs This gives an average of 216lbs. For your further information Jeffries did not weigh in for the Finnegan fight! The Brooklyn Eagle said that barring a ko blow Corbett would have won a decision. National Police Gazette had Corbett ahead at the time of the stoppage. The NewYorkTribune said Jeffries was clearly outboxed. The New York Clipper pulled for Corbett. Please post Chuvalo's reach measurement.
Jeffries is one of those cases where you can argue it either way. You occasionally get testimony from people on the business end of his punches, suggesting that he was a very heavy hitter.
Film footage can be so poor that details are nearly impossible to determine. He is throwing a triple left hook which means an educated left hand. I don’t rate Jeffries because I can’t see Jeffries fight clearly. However the more I watch of him the more impressed I become. Can’t rate him but he appears to be an impressive fighter. He was so good that Langford who no one rates poorly would not fight him.
