Devin Haney is a bad matchup for Loma, stylistically

Agree. Too bad neither fight will happen anytime soon. It seems like Arum has maneuvered so that neither Haney, or Lopez will get a shot for a while. All of a sudden Beltran is lined up for Commey, when Lopez is the one deserving of the shot, and Arum got the WBC to nix the Haney vs Campbell fight, and instead is matching Loma with Campbell when Loma wasn't even ranked in the WBC. Then Loma talks about how he only wants belts, and will only fight mandatories after fighting many a guy who wasn't a mandatory or belt holder previously. Arum and Loma have to be planning on ducking, because now is the time to fight Lopez and Haney, not a couple fights down the line when they will be even better.

Haney has probably been matched tougher than Floyd Mayweather was early in their careers. People forget, but Floyd Mayweather the majority of his career at 130 was fighting straight bums. Probably the wrong term to use because I think it's overused and kind of disrespectful, but for real though, his opposition was straight trash, like really, really, really bad opposition. The first guy with any type of pulse was Tony Pep in 17th fight and then in his 18th fight he knocked out Genaro Hernandez. From that point on his opposition was a lot better. It's normal for a guy to fight very low level guys when starting out.

But when Mayweather was Haney's age he had not yet shown he was better than Haney. Actually, Mayweather had a pretty damn hard time against Reggie Sanders a guy who couldn't beat some guys down at the rec center. If Mayweather were to fight Loma at 20 he would have been taken to school fairly easily. Actually I think Loma would have clearly beaten Mayweather from the Genaro Hernandez fight. Mayweather's last couple fights at 130 would be a much harder task for Loma though.

The difference between Mayweather and Haney is that Mayweather didn't have a blueprint when developing his skills. He is the OG in that he developed the style and technique that Haney in emulating so well. Haney is a great student and whenever he fights Loma people will get a slight indication on what a fight between prime Floyd and Loma would have looked like. Last night I saw that Haney has really improved on that roll and counter right hand. While he did bust that body up, I didn't see the straight power jab to the body or any sign of that lighting lead left hook. Like I said, he is an excellent student and in a year or two he will be a monster man. He already hard to handle.

Haney is not a prospect but rather a contender.

Keep building fighters up to beat Loma, and he’ll just keep knocking them down.

Haney is a genuine threat against Loma but I want to see my guy Tank Davis get a shot at Chenko first.

I like that timeline better because I want Haney to get some more seasoning first. I only hope he doesn't outgrow 135 before that happens.

Didn't know Haney was a pressure fighting swarmer.
