For an actual Gazzele Punch? Marciano, he did create it. But for leaping hooks? Jones, Patterson, Tyson, Tua, Dempsey and several others at the lower weights
Midget Wolgast is up there. Henry Armstrong had a similar 'sneak' left hook. Obviously Marciano, Patterson. Dempsey and possibly Frazier.
Never heard of it in close to 40 yrs of watching the sport. Same with a check hook that some anouncer pulled out of his @## when describing a Mayweather fight. Now its thrown around constantly. Both BS IMO
A check hook is basically a very short hook thrown while on the inside usually countering a looping right hand.
There are very subtle differences like a leaping left hook is usually thrown at range to close the distance and thrown off the back foot. Check hook or short hook is on the inside and usually is a quick counterpunch. At the core of it, you are correct. They are all just hooks.
Nothing...... But their are counter-hooks, and lead hooks. You know, the obvious hooks . Also their is the old saying never hook with a great Hooker lol.....
Yes ..what im trying to get across is since i started watching the sport in 77 and training at a PAL gym ..latter at Fraziers gym ..then my son at a rec center gym i never heard these 2 descriptions until May fought Hatton and Gazelle punch never anywhere but here.
Nah, 'Gazelle' leaping left hooks have always been used. Wolgast, Armstrong etc. Even McGovern. The name 'Gazelle punch' come from the Ippo anime show I'm pretty sure. I never seen it used before that, and have never heard any coach use it. I've never seen it referenced as this in old material. Then it got popular on youtube, and Modern MA started using it as a term.
The thing with the Gazelle I never heard of until Patterson came along and even then it was still referred to as a leaping left hook. But if I was to pick out the best leaping left hooks I've seen, they were the 15th round of Ali-Frazier, the 4th round of Sharkey-Carnera and the 8th round (the first knockdown) of Marciano-Louis. Check those out. So similar they were like clones.
