He never went down as an old man fighting some of the most powerful boxers of the 90s (Holyfield, Cooney, Moorer, Morrison and Briggs). When he was younger he was knocked down by Ali (out), Lyle and Young and took much less punches from his opponents than he was old. How was it possible his chin has become more and more resistant with the passing of the time? Can a different motivation to fight improve the resistance of a fighter? In your opinion?
He learned patience , guile and how to pace himself and hterefore did not leave himself vulnerable when exhaustion set in!
Because he never fought a genuine threat in his comeback. BUt but but Holyfield.......average puncher with good counters ........his claim to fame is stopping a washed up Tyson on his feet .....he could not even keep Glass chinned Moorer on the deck, a guy Methusalem Foreman waxed with one shot. If the Old Man would have fought Tyson/Bowe/Lewis/Ruddock etc he would have been stopped ...............once he is down he aint getting up because he would have taken way too much punishment un til he hits the deck.
Holyfield hit hard enough to drop Mercer.Moorer 1 in the 1st fight ,5 times in the 2nd .Tyson ,Bowe . I'd say that's pretty hard.
He is a sharp puncher but not a hard puncher......and he could not keep any of them down..........I already gave the Moorer example, he is the definition of pure glass, he makes Morrison look iron chinned One more time , Moorer kept getting up.....Mercer got up and finished the fight........Bowe knocked him the F out afterwards......and after throwing the absolute Kitchen sink at a washed up Tyson who was never ever in any shape to go a hard 12 after prison he eventually got a 11th hour standing Ref stoppage.... Holyfield is not a hard punche period , even on PED's which he was on for the vast majority of his career and because of that Foreman fought him...same against Morrison, he thought he could sleep that fragile chin.....Foreman would have never gone near a Tyson/Bowe or Lewis in the same time frame he fought Holy.....as a matter of fact, when they all had belts over the next few years he went MIA and fought Tomatoe cans instead.
It's hard to pinpoint the exact ingredients of punch resistance, but it is most likely a combination of physical, psychological and technical factors. There's plenty of plausible reasons why Old Foreman had a "better chin". He was defensively more astute, keeping his chin tucked down, using a cross-arm defence to block punches, and rolling with punches better rather than taking them flush. He had better composure, not panicking and flailing when he was hit. He had better stamina (or at least used his energy more efficiently), so he was fresher and less vulnerable to fatigue related knockdowns. He also carried more weight, which may have made him more resistant to impact (this seems to hold true in some cases). Finally, Old Foreman was probably a lot better at not letting on when he was hurt. He admitted to being shook up against Cooney, but it was much less noticeable than for example when he was hurt on multiple occasions against Lyle.
Lol yeah Tommy Morrison wasn't a genuine threat. A guy who is known for being one of the hardest punchers in heavyweight history. Bert Cooper a guy who had a incredible punch but was plague by drugs. Shannon Briggs was a big time puncher no matter how good you think as him as a boxer. Gerry Cooney could punch. Alex Stewart could punch. Lou Savarese was a big 6'5 230 plus pound undefeated fighter with a sold punch. Michael Moorer was the two time heavyweight champion of the world. He beat Holyfield when Mike Tyson couldn't beat him. Moorer also had good pop to his punch even at heavyweight. Pierre Coezter was a solid fighter and I could go. Why are guys like you on boxing forums? Clearly you don't really know much about boxing.
Against Lyle he was knocked down. Which means he had no choice but show he was hurt. Cooney never hurt Foreman to that extent. The reason Foreman went down from Lyle was also because he was rusty. He didn't fight in what 18 months? Against Jimmy Young Foreman suffered a heat stroke. Against Ali he just threw so many punches and gassed himself out against Ali.
It is also funny how every time a guy gets knocked down he has a glass chin. Morrison was stopped 3 times in his career. Against Lewis a massive puncher. Against Mercer after tiring and getting hit with a barrage of punches that would of stopped most people. Then he was stopped against Michael Bentt in a fight he was partying all night before the fight. He walked right into a punch that caught him right on the chin. Morrison was never stopped by one punch. Each time he was knocked down it was from being hit with a barrage of punches while walking into the punch. Michael Moorer was stopped 3 times. By Evander Holyfield who also stopped Tyson. So I guess Tyson has a glass chin. By David Tua a massic puncher and To George Foreman. There is no shame into being stopped by any of these guys. Holyfiled's power was good enough to hurt Riddick Bowe and be the first person to knock him down. I am pretty sure you are just trolling. You figure if you make a stupid comment people will respond to you. I responded to you twice. That is all you will get out of me.
As the man says. Old /middle age brought wisdom to Foreman that was lacking in his first incarnation. He was of those rare boxers like Walcott and Lewis that improved with age.
We are arguing semantics now We both know that Holy is not a hard puncher If he would punch hard he would not have gone 1-4 against Bowe/Lewis......he landed some decent shots on both but just could not pull it off due to punching power
No you are arguing against facts, Morrison was a big puncher ranked no9 Briggs was a good puncher ranked no7. Im gone, like MH , no point continuing with you.
Huh ? Morrison at least won a couple of meaningful fights vs who exactly did Briggs EVER beat who was not a can ? Lewis walked right thru those two can crushers while Grandpa Foreman lost to both.....Lewis fought carefully against a shot to shid ghost of Mike Tyson but showed no respect whatsoever against those two.........and no , Foreman did not win against Briggs , same AS Fury did not beat Wilder......in the history books Foreman lost and Fury got a draw. The end. Please no Tame Wolf mentioning, a dreadful fight with Briggs needing a oxygen tent after the 12th while throwing 2 punches a round
