The first reply basically answered the question.

theres no regression, there was simply a better crop of talent back then. im sure fighters will come along who will have just as good or better footwork. Only time will tell

So not only are feinting, slipping, body-punching, etc. lost arts... but now also footwork! And according to the original thread, also the jab is now not what it used to be. Which is why there are fewer knockouts today!! Is there no end to the silliness?

Yes. In the HWs after Holyfield and Wlad Klitschko the footwork has become outdated.

makes one wonder why all of these message board experts don't train some fighters in the "lost arts" of boxing? According to a lot of them, all of the boxing skills were lost when _________ (fill in the blank) died - only the message board posters still retain the knowledge of the "lost arts." I suspect that most of the people criticizing the footwork of modern boxers don't know what footwork is, just like the same ones probably don't understand what feinting, slipping, body punching, etc. are.

IMO, anything that is "lost" in boxing just isn't used because it is no longer effective. What is "lost" can/will be brought back if it is ever needed. It is stunning that many of the same people can watch a Marciano fight and see his footwork and gush about how great he is, then criticize the footwork of modern fighters. If people would learn something about boxing mechanics, and watch video instead of reading "fluff" books about fighters of the past, they might appreciate the newer fighters.

Vasyli Lomachenko has a unique, highly effective and very aggressive fighting style that includes tremendous footwork.

Lomachenko invented feet in 2010, and footwork a year or so later. I'm too poor to buy any myself, I just make do with some wheels I nicked off a Lidl trolley and got a gypsy to stick on with gaffer tape. It makes boxing a trifle vexing tbh, I struggle to get torque in my left hook. Honestly, I tried that Fitzsimmons shift and looked a proper c***, nearly as bad as Willie Pep. I know, I know, it's awful isn't it?! Looked like I was trying the Honey Cokey after about 20 pints of Special Brew and a few totes on the marijuana. It's a lost art, lads. ****ing God bless feet.

In boxing, I believe there's nothing new under the sun. Just that techniques etc adapt to the period. The level of competition and popularity of boxing at a given time helps solidify and refine these skills IMO.

Very good! The truth is footwork isn't a lost art, it's just seldom seen at the highest levels of boxing in all timelines.

Lomo is a unique cat, very quick with his hands and feet. He uses intelleigent footwork and uncanny balance to put himself in a position to force the action where he always has the advantages.
