Kemper Morton 6' 2" I think the last guy he fought Landberg was 6' 2" James Shuler 6' 1" Fred Hutchings was tall. I don't know his height. The height never bothered Hearns. He actually did ok fighting taller guys. Sometimes the shorter ones who fought him wild gave him more trouble. When I lived in Los Angeles he had a tough fight with some guy called the fighting grocer. Ed Dalton. That guy was rather short, but he was aggressive. To his credit, by that point Hearns was used to those kinds of fighters and he sat back and landed the right and picked his shots. Even that style was less troublesome to Hearns once he got older and more guys employed it.
He did ok with taller fighters .. And not many guys matched his jab. Virgil Hill was 6-1 I think and his reach was 77 almost like Tommy's and still Tommy outjabbed him. The height was not his advantage. The jab length and speed were what was his strength, then dropping in the right
Box Rec gives Tommy as 6' 11/2" Nate Miller 6'2" Michael Olajide 6'1" James Shuler 6'1" Fred Hutchins 6'2" Iran Barkley 6'1" Andrew Maynard 61" Uriah Grant 6'11/2"
not than all the guys he fought. Nate Miller was taller. He fought many guys who were his height and he did well. Sometimes better than with the shorter stockier ones who absorbed punches better. Even his fight against Luis Primera in 1980,, Primera was not a little guy and Hearns stopped him with body punches.
Only welter I can recall who Hearns fought who was in the same range height-wise was Archibald “Fighting Jim” Richard, a guy of no consequence from the Netherlands Antilles. He was around 6 feet tall looking at him on video against Hearns, but he was awkward so didn’t fight quite as tall as he was. Hit Man took him out in 3.
