Is anyone here old enough to remember Frazier losing the title to Foreman?

I'd be interested to know what kind of impact it had at the time.

Whenever I watch the fight, I make a conscious decision to remind myself that the guy being annihilated is the undefeated Heavyweight Champion of the World.

I can't think of any other occasion where a very good World Champion has been beaten so emphatically. Anyone watching it must have been astonished at what they were seeing.

    How do you mean?
    I'm not sure that's a fair comparison!

I'd have said Foreman was more a Douglas, beating a unbeaten, dominate champ. Thu that could also apply to Ali, who beat an unbeaten dominant champ..

But you said Frazier was the original Buster Douglas.

Even so, I still think it's unfair to compare Foreman to Douglas.

Foreman completely obliterated the World Champion, Douglas didn't.

Foreman was undefeated with a very impressive KO record when he challenged for the World Title, Douglas wasn't.

Foreman, for a time, had an aura of invincibility. Douglas never did.

I remember it well, I actually followed Foreman's career to that date and fancied him but the manner astonished me. Looking back now the ref was terrible, bit like Wlad and Povetkin, probably wouldn't affect the outcome but completely favoured one fighters style.

    Yep.

Lost money gambling on that one. Nobody thought Joe could get destroyed like that. He might lose, but never a destruction.

Frazier was looked upon as unbeatable after his heroic effort vs Ali in 71 and his obliteration of the leading contenders up until that point. Foreman’s effort was akin to Dempsey destroying Willard.

That's a good example of a champion getting pulverised but I don't think it's as notable as Frazier vs Foreman as it wasn't the first time Patterson was pulverised.

And Patterson couldn't take a punch like Frazier. He was even floored when defending his title against a guy making his professional debut!

Was Willard ever looked upon as unbeatable?
