That’s because people on here only talk about HW’s and the fab 4 in any depth. Minter was a very good boxer (better than decent) with decent power. If he was not so susceptible to cuts he may be remembered for more than that. All but 1 of his loses was on cuts (if memory serves?). Vito Antuofermo fights and his fights with Finnigan are well worth the time. His stoppage against Sugar Ray Seales is worth watching as well. Very underrated and under appreciated IMO! He has an akward straight stand up style that makes him look out of place, he reminds me of boxing’s equivalent of Larry Bird (not in greatness) but in looking unathletic and still being top notch. Deceptive in appearance. But very skilled and worth checking out...I have no logical reason for being an Alan Minter fan/appreciator but I am!
Quite a bit better than 'decent'. How degrading. He was a world class fighter with high level skills.
A very good boxer indeed. It's because of that loss to Hagler that it tends to over shadow his talent.
I met Alan. Somebody asked him if he got the decision against Hamsho (which I think he deserved) would he have rematched Hagler? Alan looked at him and said “Hagler? Fight him again? You must be fukking joking!”
As Harry Callahan said in the movie "Magnum Force". " A man's got to know his limitations ". Clearly Minter was smart enough to know his lol.
He was a world class contender, and was a European Middleweight champion. He was also mentioned as a future challenger to World Middleweight champion Carlos Monzon, in 1976, after Carlos defeated Rodrigo Valdes, by a unanimous 15 round decision, to unify the WBA and WBC titles, in Monte Carlo, on June 26 1976, Minter at ringside for that fight, watched Carlos deck Rodrigo in round 14, with a counter right hand. Minter later remarked that after watching the Monzon fight, To be a truly great champion, you have to be ice cold and have total composure. Minter had a stinging right jab, and a very hard left hook. On March 16 1980 he defeated Vito Antuofermo to win the World Middleweight championship, in Las Vegas by a majority decision. On June 28 1980, Minter repeated another victory over Vito, when Antuofermo could not answer the bell for round 8, due to severe cuts, to successfully defend his title. On Sept 27 1980, he was stopped by Marvelous Marvin Hagler, by TKO 3, due to terrible laceration to the eye, losing his World Middleweight title, in London. Minter was a very good fighter and a credit to his country.
As previously mentioned Minter was better than decent, a good fighter. He tends to be talked down on here, for example Vito Antuofermo is always talked up on here, yet Minter decimated him in their second fight. I also thought he beat Hamsho although I think i’m in the minority on here on that one.
