In fairness Hearn is right here that ESPN must be doing their confers over this. They are all in on the Wilder vs Fury fight as the have no other top fights available to them. If Ruiz wins and PBC make the Ruiz vs Wilder fight Top Ranks budget will be massively cut in my opinion.

The biggest fights in world boxing right now are

Ruiz vs Joshua
Wilder vs Joshua/ Ruiz winner
Wilder vs Fury
Spence vs Crawford
Canelo vs GGG
To a lesser extent Loma vs Garcia


And ESPN are not likely to get any of them at this point.

ESPN must surely be looking at the numbers the UFC brings in and then look at what Top Rank and be asking questions.

 

Somebody please explain to me the logic in holding fights in big arenas when you can't sell tickets?

I'm failing to see the benefit.

After the shwarz fight they tried to push a narrative of Fury becoming a star in America but that was nothing but BS.

Even with the power of ESPN behind them they can't get him over as a big draw and the opponents are not helping. Fury's profile is not rising and will never rise when they continue to put him in the ring vs Jobbers.

The public have many attractions to spend their money on. Why are Americans going to pay to watch two foreign fighters? Lineal champion means nothing when the lineal champion can't knock anyone out? Unknown European fighters who are not ranked in the top 15 are supposedly attractions when fighting the 'lineal champion of the world'. Its laughable stuff.

Dentoy Wilder an American HW champion who knocks out everyone can't even sell out arenas so what hope with Fury?

It's like they think if they stage enough fights in Vegas eventually people will catch on and start to turn up.

Maybe I'm missing something and this all promotion 101 but it seems very bizarre. They could put Fury in smaller arenas in other cities if they wanted but maybe Fury when signing with Top Rank said he wanted Vegas Fights. That's the only reason I can think of as to why Bob Arum is doing this.

On his resumé it says Tyson Fury fought (and won) at the T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas. It doesn’t mention that the arena was only 33% full.

 

I always wonder if with fights they know will struggle whether they should find really off the wall venues, so only 4k people can go. But it would be the niche of the place.

Sure there is a Glory kickboxing event held in the Daghstani mountains

The thing os Loma and Crawford would be raking in the $$ with another promoter. Arum pays his boys peanuts.

 

No surprise that this flopped. He fought Otto Wallin, he couldv'e found an American bum with a loud mouth & it might have done better - wasn't that meant to be the plan?

 

Loma was guaranteed over $3million for the Crolla fight, I wouldn't say thats peanuts tbh.

Arums problem is he is one of the best in the business at guiding his fighters towards world titles, but one of the worst in the business for getting opponents for his champions when they finally win a title.

 

Yikes. Not good news for anyone connected with Boxing really, there's little evidence of Fury translating social media interest into paying customers on this showing.

I'd be angry if I'd paid to get in and there were more comps than paying customers. I don't know how many travel from the UK or Ireland to watch Fury, but they will likely be disproportionately represented in the paying column because who is going to fly to Vegas on the offchance there's a cheaper ticket available closer to the fight? So Fury's hardcore support pay whilst bored reps in town for a conference get a freebie.

To be fair to Bob, he admits that he does smoke a lot of weed. Coupled with the fact that he’s 87 years old, I’m amazed that he keeps his **** together at all.

the gate receipts just about cover the other fighters on the card, never mind costs. It was free to air on the ESPN+ app? If Tyson Fury is really getting 7/8 million dollars + a fight then they must be taking some hit.

 

You have to imagine the figures being thrown around at the Fury / Top Rank announcement were top side projections based on an awful lot of variable factors. For Fury to be getting those figures there must surely have to be a sizeable uplift in app sign-ups, retention of those new customers, increased referrals from Fury social post etc etc. Otherwise the deal is financial suicide.
