I don't understand why Hayers needs to see it as 'dubious'. Attitudes like that are what contribute to mental health stigma on a wider scale. Why can't he just give him the benefit of the doubt?

One point which Hayers has failed to counter is that given Fury's background, there's even more stigma. In his 'culture' men are expected to be men and just to 'get on with it'. Fury's response to mental health reflects this actually, his answer was to 'get on with it' - get back in the gym, get a routine, get a purpose. Basically reconnecting with his inner caveman.

I think, given Fury's background, he wouldn't lie about his own mental health. It would be a hard thing to admit to in the first place.

Fury exaggerates and lies about many things - I'm very sceptical about whether he actually donated his purse to the homeless for example. But I don't think he's lying about this.

Why do I think it’s dubious? I’ve been very clear on this. Fury is a proven drug cheat and habitual liar who’s illness came to prominence at the same time he was banned for the aforementioned drug cheating. I see no reason as to why this is particularly controversial.

I’m in no way belittling mental illness or suggesting it’s impact is not widespread and severe. What I am doing is raising questions about the reliability of a serial liar.

That’s fine but you are belittling mental illness, intentionally or otherwise. Not sure why you feel the need to keep going on and on.

His illness came to prominence several years before when he was talking about it in 2010.

You know what though, let’s say you’re right and he’s making it all up (he’s not), he’s still sending out a message by talking openly about mental illness. That’s only a good thing.

His illness did not 'come to prominence' in any meaningful way. Indeed, a darkly amusing feature of this whole farce is the Fury fanboys queuing up to decry anyone suggesting their drug cheating, pathologically lying hero may be lying about his mental illness by demonstrating their own laughable knowledge about mental health. I've read people on here genuinely coming out with stuff like 'of course he's mentally ill - nobody who isn't would put on that much weight.' 'Evidence' for his condition was given as his 'weird' behaviour - dressing up as batman and the like. That's no more a sign of mental illness than Jorge Campos' kit.

Bottom line is he's never been diagnosed, never revealed anything about how he managed to come to be treated, never revealed anything about the help he sought and so on. He got popped for being a drug cheat, would have been banned for a while, had his mental health episode, then came back. Yes mate, just like Ali.

What is your response to the question about his heritage then? For people of Gypsy stock, mental health is still taboo. As mentioned above, men are 'supposed' to be men. Talking about mental health would be seen as a sign of weakness. Doesn't that make it more likely he's not lying?

I replied to you about this last week and gave you timestamped links where Fury said he'd been to see professionals and described his experience getting it seen to. You obviously didn't look - it's a shame because that post took me a little while to construct!

Are you suggesting that an inherent characteristic of men of gypsy stock is honesty?
