Jeffries Era and rules set against challenger Mike Spinks, from the first Holmes ft? 25 round, can Jeffries wear his man down or is Spinks to akward??
Jeffries, who would kill mike in 2 , would still be in thr ring awaiting mikes arrrival. Meanwhile mike is "hightailing it out of there".
If old man Fitzs can have major success with his smaller size, power and methodical footwork, then Spinks will definitely do well. (Not saying he wins in this rule-set).
At 6ft 2 1/2" 200lbs, Spinks would be the biggest man of class,Jeffries faced until his abortive comeback against Johnson. Jeffries wore down 2 old men in Fitz and Corbett neither of whom was near Spinks weight , age, or had engaged in recent ring activity. Ruhlin seems to have had a Golota moment and seemed to freeze according to the reports.He was retired in his corner after sampling a few left hooks to the body earlier . Jeffries couldn't stop Sharkey,maybe Spinks couldn't either, but this isnt some cut and dried matchup Jeffries looks very open to the right hand in the footage we have of the Ruhlin fight and ,as durable as Jeffries was ,he wouldn't be able to walk through the Spinks Jinx with impunity ,imo . There are cases to be made for either man imo ,but I'll go for the Boilermaker by decision.
Good stuff Tonto! This fight, imo would start out with Jeffries looking bemused by Spinks curious way of pawing his jab and his jerky style. This would set the pattern for the first half of the fight, but as Jeffries warms up and starts using his strength to his advantage we'd see Spink s become more vulnerable the longer it goes on. Spink s had heart in a war and he'd battle back but this sort of battle would take its toll on him and by the 20 th round its all Jeffries. I can actually see Michael being dropped now with body shots but he hangs on bravely to lose a decision. Tough fight for both guys.
As Tyson showed Spinks didn’t really belong small among the best at heavyweight. He beat an older larry Holmes, got a gift decision in rematch, defeated a shot Gerry Cooney and some obscure Swedish guy in a title defense. After getting bounced by Tyson, Spinks knew he was done at heavyweight and retired at age 32. He entered the ring scared as if he knew he was going to lose early. A fine light heavyweight who didn’t match up with power hitters at heavyweight in their primes.
Cooney wasn't a power hitter? Lets look at your points. "He beat an older larry Holmes" Holmes was 35 & 36 for those fights and weighed 221.75lbs &223lbs and had fought Jeffries took the title from 167lbs, 37 years old Fitzsimmons who hadn't fought for over 2 years. "some obscure Swedish guy in a title defense" Tangstadd was no world beater but at 6'2" 214.75lbs and 24-2-2 he was at least a heavyweight as we understand the term today. Not 5'8" 183lbs like Jeffries first defence was, Tom Sharkey. "defeated a shot Gerry Cooney" Spinks 3rd defence Cooney was 30 years old and had fought and won a year earlier, he was 28-1-0 losing only to Holmes.He was also 6'6" and 238lbs and a tremendous left hooker. Not like Jeffries 3rd defence who was John Finnegan 180lbs 4-2-4 who had won just 1 of his last 4 fights and been ko'd in his last one. I'm picking Jeffries here , but not because of any of your blatantly biased comments!
Tangstadd was terrible choice.. He had zero power. Watch the fight, and there are plenty of no names today better than 24-2-2. He wasn't ranked, was he? Who did he beat? Cooney was mentally shot on on the bottle. Holmes was certainly past his best for Spinks, but he did deserve to win the re-match, If you cannot see the above, you don't know boxing, and that is your problem! Check yourself and ask others in the forum on the my above points in this post. As for Tangstadd himself, I would objectify pick him over the Ross and Flynn, honest.
Tangstad was Spinks second defence. Was he better or worse than John Finnegan180lbs 4-2-4 ,who had won 1 of his last 4 fights and been ko'd in his last outing? Was Finnegan Ranked?lol Cooney had fought and won a year earlier. You can't have it both ways .
I would not be betting on this one. Spinks herky jerky movement might give the stolid Boilermaker fits. It's really a toss up,imo.
For this I'm going to allow Spinks come in as a light heavyweight. As it didn't exist then and he was obviously better there anyway. If it's under modern day rules with 15 rounds, then Spinks shuts him out and counters him silly. If it's under the rules of Jefferies era, then he grapples Spinks and maules him to one of the ugliest and awkward decisions imaginable
