Watched Ali featured on ' This is your life ' 1978 on utube. Great viewing . One of the guests to honour his life story was Joe Frazier. They seemed great friends and were full of jokes and camaraderie. There was none of the bitterness that seemed to dog parts of their history, especially from Fraziers point of view. Given the warmth that seemed on show on this occasion , I'm confused that on subsequent films I've seen , Frazier seemed bitter. Incidentally Ali looked in decent shape ( he had 'retired' after the Spinks win ) although he looked a little tired physically and his speech wasn't as lucid as it had once been. This was late '78. Good viewing if anyone hasnt seen it.
Number is issues caused Frazier’s latter years bitterness. Frazier lost most everything. Ali had the life of a millionaire. Joe as the years went by lost some of his mental capabilities and drank quite a bit. All leading to the bitter old man we saw prior to his death.
Ali also took Frazier's money. Frazier defended Ali. Ali never gave it back, and betrayed his trust. He called him an uncle Tom, probably the worst insult at the time for a high profile black man. What's funny is Ali was the privileged middle class kid, whilst Frazier was poor as **** and worked the land (which you seem to fetishize, yet exempt Ali). Ali constantly hounded Frazier. He got his kids bullied at school. He made black media hate Joe. And after all the beatings they gave each other, the war of words, Ali wanted to apologise to make himself feel better. Yet he couldn't even do it to his face. Cowardly. No wonder he was bitter towards Ali.
No. That does not explain the original poster who cites a point in the late 70’s where Joe was warm and friendly towards Ali. He grew bitter way after as he became old, broke, drunk and impaired. All the bitterness then rise to the top.
You could atleast respond to me directly as I am doing to you. Cowardly. You seem to fetishize the working class laborer boxer, yet continually exempt Ali, who behaved like a piece of **** towards Joe Frazier and never worked a day in his life. Hypocrite. Joe is exactly the type of man that you love Dempsey and Jefferies for. Frazier was bitter because Ali performed unjustified actions towards him for over a decade. He seemed to be full of life for everyone else and his gym.
Thanks. You seem to have understood my question. I appreciate the other poster explaining the reasons why Joe would be annoyed with Ali, I was already aware of those things . This show was recorded in late '78 when all the things Ali said and did, were water under the bridge , but Joe seemed very warm and friendly towards Ali. His friendship didnt seem forced or contrived, there seemed a genuine warmth between them. Joe looked in great shape although his speech was noticeably slurred. He seemed very happy though , in a genuine way. Maybe you are correct in that bad luck and bad living made him bitter ? I read he used to sleep and live in one room above his gym. He was very family focused in his earlier days , did he split with his wife ? I do remember when he was only in his early/ mid 60's he looked way older than he actually was .
Ali had squandered his $ as well. He made more than Frazier did but with all those leaches and people riding him for $ he was in bad financial condition near his retirement. His friends tried to help him but Ali didn't have the education or attention to detail to deal with them maturely. Hence the story of Don King ripping Ali off for $1 million by showing him $50,000 in cash after the Holmes fight. It was Ali last Wife who revived his financial state. She was able to market him and used his name as a brand in an buisness saavy way.
Probably, I just thought there was genuine warmth between them. Ali showed great respect for all his ex opponents who showed up at the event.
Ali had a few years where he was headed in the wrong direction financially. However with the guidance of his last wife he was a millionaire many times over. I never rooted against Frazier in any of his bouts. He was a favorite for many reasons. However in the end Joe was broke, divorced, broken and a drunk. Conversely Ali although a sick man physically was also a millionaire and universally adored. This played upon Frazier especially in later years. You can see the bitterness escalate over time whereas as a younger man there was not nearly as much of an issue.
BS any friendliness you saw there was for the cameras. Joe hated Ali's guts since Manila and befor that to a lesser degree. Your completely misinformed here.
