I think he seems like a great dude but GGG has looked a lot worse under his guidance . I just don't think he's a very good trainer at all. What are your thoughts?
GGG has deteriorated but it seemed like he didn't give any real advice in the corner as his strategy hardly changed to adapt to the fight.
I agree with you. I also thought it was inappropriate for Banks to say he thought the fight "was a lot closer." When asked about the decision he said he was surprised it was a unanimous decision. Based on those comments he almost seemed to be signaling his man lost. Not acceptable for a trainer to say.
Not sure what the thread is implying but Banks knows his boxing but...... Heres the problem with him ( Banks if you read these ) You don't instill urgency and you tell your fighters they are winning and just go with the flow..etc….A cornerman has to communicate and register at times to get that fighter moving. so whats the problem here? Well we see hes telling GGG hes winning easy early ,no emotion just relaxed state throughout the fight, banks himself didn't make it as a HW bc of that attitude and it shows with his fighters. Boxing isn't a one man sport its a team,MOST of the time the trainer makes the difference ,they have to push or get to the fighter sitting down in that corner ,does Banks ? Not so sure ,hes smart but very non emotion and fighters need emotion. A trainer shouldn't want to win more then the fighter ,but sometimes you got to and Its why Ali Bashir should have been Wlads trainer all along, Banks makes to many misjudges being comfortable in the corner.
To say the fight was a lot closer is pretty dodgy for the scorecards, GGG won by the KD and 1 round on the other 2. Totally agree with you on Banks being in the wrong.
I would ask you to rewatch the fight. I will do the same and will get back with opinions on the fight. Thanks!
I'm not sure how much the corners influenced this fight, but it certainly was less than GGG's ongoing (but gradual, not stark) physical aging-based degradation and Derevyanchenko just being on as fuck and committing all-in to his gameplan even after being thrown an early curveball.
Same thing I thought when G signed him. Bad decision based likely on greed. (Doesnt have to pay him as much as he would a better trainer) But... just imo.
I like J-Banks as a person but I'm not sure of his talents as a top trainer. To be fair, I can't think of too many trainers I rate that highly and I've heard James Bashir sort of throw shade on Banks ability in the regard in the past albeit he wasn't being malicious. He just thinks Banks is too young and inexperienced. Emanuel Steward RIP (who Banks is a protege of) is one of the few trainers of recent times who I held in the highest regard and who I would've had zero qualms about any fighter enlisting the services of whereas with the exception of Papachenko and Freddie Roach there aren't too many others I rate that highly.
I think Golovkin at 37 (and with hundreds of amateur fights and now 40 pro) has probably reached that plateau where you don't really need a real "X's and O's" guy, and in fact bringing in somebody who's going to attempt to reinvent the wheel tactically is just going to be disruptive. He just needs somebody to hold a towel and cheerlead with a calming voice, basically.
He seems like a great guy, and is a really likeable person. But as a trainer he sucks Karagandan Yak balls.
Well, that is two fights in a row that GGG has looked human. I thought he was amazing in both Canelo fights. But he was getting touched too much by Rolls and then was hurt tonight. So, it's either father time OR Banks is just not working out. Only GGG knows which is true.
Or maybe the opponent was actually good on under 15 or whatever fights coming in ? I know that's not a concept in boxing and either fans cry it was to easy or hard ,theres NEVER that GUY was actually skilled type fight. Its either the guy who was supposed to win easy wasnt good at all or its the trainers fault . lol
You didn't notice Golovkin's improved defence? That's what he was working on with Banks. I noticed after Golovkin was visibly hurt multiple times to the body for probably the only time in his career, he kept his right arm by his flank. That was Banks' work! Banks is just another one of those American opportunist coaches who play off the mystique of being in Kronk gym or some other bull**** and these technically schooled foreigners buy into it in embarrassing fashion. GGG and Kovalev are both guilty of this baloney. They think they'll get some magical tricks from people who know far less about boxing technique than they do and are far less experienced too. At this point, GGG should just hire his brother to train him and do the pads, then have his conditioning team or whatnot. Maybe do some work with Roach part time like Fury did, since he lives nearby. Fooling around with his style now is not smart, it's just going to confuse him. And I don't think I've ever seen him hit so much. Sickness wouldn't help, but regardless, he's a finished product, Banks can't offer anything, particularly if you think about the style Banks used himself. As far as beating Canelo goes, GGG has spent 24 rounds with him and would know more than any coach about what works with Canelo and what doesn't. I don't believe anyone is going to have a better understanding of the strategies needed.
I've never seen GGG get touched as much he did today. And what happened to his so called "improved head movement"? No, I didn't see an improved defense. Just the total opposite.
