I never disagreed with what you are saying but the unfortunate point is GGG wasted his prime away fighting c level opposition and because of that we will never know how good he truely was.
He reminds of Haglers last few fights where he was stuck in one gear not shot but faded.....he did this with Canelo also just one gear like he was trying to change gears and couldn't and every once in awhile he could open up but just stuck like a transmission going out But lets not forget about Deveryenchenko I have been watching this guy and he is top tier talent with a world class amateur pedigree...not quite as crisp as Canelo but damn near as good and strong as hell with a gas tank that doesn't quit. I have to agree with the guys on there that Sergiy is just that good of a fighter so part of the credit of GGG not looking rime had as much to do with SD as it did with GGG. SD is respected enough within the boxing community that someone even mentioned that this fight is going to take a lot out of GGG because SD is that kind of a fighter. On a side note I thought GGG lost this fight SD was all over him from the 2nd round on and hurt him with the body shot that had the ref not been in the way would have been interesting to see how it woud have played out
Yep he was the best of his era but you're right you can't judge him against other greats as he had no greats to fight in his prime. I think he's always been held to very high standards on account of his knockout run and dominance but imo pro boxing has always been about beating those you're supposed to beat(easier said than done) and stepping up against the best.Andre Ward was the best at this albeit I didn't like his style. Canelo for example beats Rocky Fielding as expected but he often struggles against the good fighters like Lara,Trout,Cotto,Jacob's albeit he found a way to win. it's clearly a bit of both with Golovkin though?60/40 opposition or in Canelo 50/50 and his age has made him look vulnerable. I never subscribed to him being impossible to hurt.
Exactly. In the mind of GGG's fans he began to decline right around the time the already existing weaknesses in his armoury began getting exposed by a higher level of competition, easier to believe that it was down to 'aging' than to accept he was never anything special to begin with.
I don’t think he’s shot but he has definitely slowed down. It happens to every fighter. GGG was a great champion, best MW if his era by far. Also, he always handles himself with class and dignity. Some fans prefer a trash talking punk, thankfully boxing has no shortage of those types of boxers for them to root for.
You are right but we all know he is chasing that last Canelo check, 45 million in the bank can't hurt anyone who is looking to retire.
If he had been shot then he would not have been able to win a fight at the level. However he doesnt look that far off being shot. Every day that passes is a day closer to him being a shot fighter. The longer he fights on at this age, the more punishment he will take and eventually he will get an absolute pasting. I would advise him to have a goodbye fight at home at a lower level and retire. There is nothing to gain from fighting on now at world level. He surely has earned enough millions in both Canelo fights to be set up for life 20 times over.
You can also argue that GGG "struggled" vs all the good fighters he fought, Jacobs, Canelo and Chenko.
Ok. An issue is the best EE fighters have historically stayed in the AMs longer than the best American or definitely Mexican fighters. They come to the US and start to build a career in the pros later in life than some others. That may change in the future but historically this is somewhat true. Is too bad because there are some good fighters coming out of that part of the world. Longer careers in the US gives more time to build a fan base and drive the numbers needed to secure the biggest fights . Otherwise they are guys who are a threat without a lot of upside. A think that is changing over time and guys like Loma and GGG are getting some name recognition with casual boxing fans needed to drive numbers. The next generation of EE fighters might have better as in longer and more lucrative careers.
yes absolutely that's my point and that's how it's supposed to be.This is why I have thing about fanboys who go on about their favourite fighter "destroying" the opponent .We seen evidence of this last week with Spence. 50/50 or 60/40 fights nearly always deliver Floyd v Oscar is a good example.
