Charles 126-121 (Charles 10-9) 14. Charles 136-130 (Charles 10-9) 15. Charles 146-139 (Charles 10-9) Some excellent combinations and movement here from Charles. Louis did well given his lay off and the fact he was basically one handed.
Charles vs Walcott 3: Round 1: 10-9 Walcott. Pretty even round, gave it to walcott based on aggression. Round 2: 19-19 Even (10-9 Charles). Again a close round. Charles landed a very clean left hook halfway through and was a bit more aggressive. Round 3: 29-28 Walcott (10-9 Walcott). Great round for Walcott. Won all exchanges. Good bodywork, head movement and jab. Full package fighter. Round 4: 39-37 Walcott (10-9 Walcott). Walcott's command of distance is masterful. Round 5: 49-46 Walcott (10-9 Walcott). Once again Walcott is hitting Charles frequently. Charles' inside work is nothing with Walcott's clinch maneuvering Round 6: 59-55 Walcott (10-9 Walcott). Charles much more aggressive here. Perhaps desperate. Walcott landed clean counters. Round 7: Walcott decapitates Charles Charles vs Louis: Round 1: 10-9 Charles. Louis' ring generalship is something to behold. The jab, head movement and parrying, all very well schooled and experienced. Charles looks leaner and more athletic here at 184 than he did at 182 against Walcott, somehow. He's moving better as well. Round 2: 19-19 Even (10-9 Louis). Louis' defense continues to impress me. He landed crisp shots to Charles and really pressed the fight. Doesn't look 36 here. Round 3: 29-28 Louis (10-9 Louis). Louis seemed to stiffen here and Charles had good work with his jab at some points. Much closer than the last round. Round 4: 39-37 Louis (10-9 Louis). Good jabs by Louis. Charles did well for the first half of the round but Louis started taking over after. Round 5: 48-47 Louis (10-9 Charles). Good effort by Louis but Charles' blistering handspeed and combinations won in the end. Round 6: 58-56 Louis (10-9 Louis). Extremely close, i gave it to Louis by aggression. Both fighters had good, consistent workrate but Charles was on the backfoot. Ill continue my scoring tomorrow morning
Walcott-Charles III: Basically a bigger, stronger, more powerful fighter beating up a much smaller one. Ezzard Charles looks tiny. Hard to believe this was only a 12-pound weight difference. He looks like a super-middleweight. Doubt he’s bigger than guys like Badou Jack or James DeGale. I only gave Charles one round, the second. R1: Even. Walcott fairly flat-footed, seems like he’s throwing soft jabs to try to induce Charles to open up so that he can time him and nail him with a hard right. Charles seems to be looking for openings so that he can ambush Walcott from distance. Neither accomplishing much. Both lead with rights more than modern fighters. Neither really works off the jab all that much (sparse jabbing and almost no 1-2s or double jabs). R2: Charles round. Threw far more jabs this round, but mostly the jousting kind where you fall into close range after throwing it. Still little attempts to actually work off the jab with combinations, etc. R3: Walcott. Walcott landed a hard hook that was the best punch of the fight thus far. R4: Walcott. Walcott landed the cleaner punches. The size and power difference is starting to show, and he also seems sharper and faster than Charles at this point. It’s really evident when they throw jabs together. Walcott could probably dominate this fight off his jab alone at this point, if he used it more. Charles is just too small and doesn’t really have any answers for how to close distance and score on Walcott effectively. Maybe he’s waiting for Walcott to tire or get careless? Charles had his only decent moment of the round at the very end, when Walcott threw a sloppy lunging right from distance, which Charles easily avoided and countered. R5: Walcott. Charles did some of his best work in this round by landing a couple decent rights, but Walcott landed the hardest punches of the round (especially the right to Charles’ jaw). R6 & R7: Walcott. One-sided round, one-way traffic at this point. Charles has slowed down. Walcott seems to realize that Charles is pretty harmless at this point, so he’s starting to take more chances. Rushes Charles and opens up with some wide power-punch flurries. Charles avoids most of them by stepping backwards, but he is unable to make Walcott pay for his aggressiveness, like a bigger or fresher fighter might have. I don’t buy that these guys are the pinnacle of the sport, in terms of skills and technique. It’s fun to watch them because they’re both crafty with impressive reflexes and natural physical talent, and they do a lot of feinting and improvising. This style of fighting relies heavily on reflexes, and its fun to watch, but I don’t see any reason to put their skills or technique on a pedestal.
Geniune question, what do you think is? Just a couple modernish ones I thought about Duran vs Leonard Hearns vs Leonard Jones vs Hopkins Toney vs McCallum McCallum vs Kalaumbay Starling vs Curry Lomachenko vs Rigo Also I forgot to say when I liked it, but great post!
