Robinson beat LaMotta a couple of times well weighing around 147.

With this weight stipulation i'd favor Monzon by decision in a tough fight.

Put in the heavier Robinson of around the St Valentines Day Massacre or a little prior and it's definitely Robinson for me.

The answer: See Napoles vs. Carlos. Granted I still think Jose gave a darn good account of himself before his 'retirement'. Ray was a Welter; his MW reign was Ray past prime and after his 1st retirement.

Sugar Ray was bigger than Napoles, faster than Napoles, hit harder and fought very differently to Napoles.

Napoles shuffled and stalked his opponents, while Robinson circled behind his jab. Carlos never had to go looking for Napoles but he will find Robinson harder to catch.

A Napoles/SRR comparison is inaccurate. SRR would provide a different style and greater skill set.

I don't think Ray beats Monzon if both weighed 160lbs ,he ain't beating him weighing 147lbs!

    Not at all.

Robinson competed strictly as a middleweight (or above) for about 2 dozen fights before his first retirement. (He had any amount of fights against middleweights before his last 147 title defense too.)

He lost 1 fight (certainly not counting his shot at Maxim) which was avenged straight away.

During this run he beat Bobo Olsen twice, Graziano , Villemain and Jake LaMotta to win the lineal and world title. After regaining it off Turpin he defended it twice before fighting Maxim and retiring.

Absolutely he was past prime in his middleweight comeback and while he had his losses he also had some very solid wins.

When people envisage the best of Ray Robinson at 160 they are looking at him prior to his first retirement.

Going into the Maxim fight he retired on he was 132-2-2.

Lamotta was dead at the weight.

Maybe but it still made Robinson lineal and world champ before his first retirement. I think it's fair to say the version of Robinson fighting regularly at middleweight before his spell would certainly be a better fighter than the one after.
