Repetition over decades tends to blow things out of proper proportion. We have paintings, poetry and polemics that recount the Dempsey-Firpo fight like it was two gods fighting on a mountaintop with hammers and lightning bolts... when in all actuality it was a skilled fighter chopping down a complete amateur in methodical fashion, briefly interrupted when the skilled fighter was pushed out of the ring. Big deal.
No one put Firpo on a pedestal. It was WELL KNOWN AND WELL UNDERSTOOD at the time of the fight that Firpo was a dangerous puncher with only a rudimentary knowledge of the finer points of the game. Only liars try to twist history into something it was not. Further it is not well known that Firpo has a dislocated left elbow the day before the bout. The doctor assigned to the bout wanted to cancel the bout. Firpo pleaded to be allowed to fight Dempsey and in an effort to prove he was fit for the bout slammed his left hand against the metal topped examination table he was sitting on and never let out a wimper. The doctor pulled his elbow back in place again without any sign of pain from the challenger. Here was a fighter with a dislocated arm pleading to step into the ring the next evening against the most destructive puncher in the world.
No sh*t, Sherlock. Unfortunately, despite your entirely pedantic input, you missed the import of my post. Perhaps we need an intellectual ruler in these parts, along with a sign that states, "If you're not this tall, you can't ride." It would suck for you but would make things better overall.
Which Community College? BA, BS, MA.... And I could give a crap for the credentials based on modern academia.
You don’t obtain an MBA from a community college nor a BS. But you would not know that. Your one of “those type” people. What’s your net worth? Annual salary? I’d bet it reflects your tendencies on these boards.
The sport without a celebrated past has nothing to aspire to and therefore no future. The complementary position to this is if "boxing is in every day and every way getting only better and better" then the fighters we have today are the best there have ever been. This is an obviously redonkulus position for anyone with even a rudimentary appreciation or knowledge of boxing... I have my own experience, perspectives, ideas and opinions and will favor the fighters I choose to favor regardless of their historical placement. If that doesn't meet with certain folks approval I hope they are entirely, outrageously and completely Offended. They may rail against my opinions but keyboard warriors are nothing to fear. I conclude that this entire post is the work of a troll, folks please don't listen to or continue to feed the creature under the bridge. He has made it clear he does not respect our views, the feeling is mutual and the GENERAL FORUM is that way ==>
