'Franchise Champion' is a title that WBC specially created for a very specific individual named Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. Many people thought that this title is a higher caste of championship level, somekind of 'super champion' title that of WBA. But as a matter of fact, that's actually not true. The purpose of this title is basically to 'strip' the champion (Canelo) of his WBC belt without offending his feeling, which the president has the utmost respect and would like to preserve their relationship at all cost, by elevating him to a whole new prestigious status within the governing body in exchange. Due to his status and fame in boxing world, it is widely known that only Canelo can choose who he wants to fight and, of course, all of its terms. Which in this case, there is no way, for anyone can force him to take a mandatory. Now, on the main topic... It is recently rumored that WBC is considering to elevate another champion to be a 'franchise champion'. That man is none other than Lomachenko who just won the organization belt just two months ago. Unlike Canelo, Loma was very serious in pursuing his mission of complete unification of all belts in the division. And he does not hesitate to protect each one of his belts as he shown when he accepted his mandatory duty for his WBA belt. But how could exactly this happen ? As you know that shortly after Loma obtained his third belt, WBC held an eliminator between Haney and Abdullaev. Haney won the fight. However, not only WBC gave him the the official challenger status, he was also given an interim champion belt. Apparently Haney can't wait for his turn to fight Loma and since then he is trying to lobby the organization to speed up mandatory date. Loma, on the other side, seems prefer to have his time for recovery while waiting for the winner of Commey vs Lopez, though he doesn't play down of chance he can have another fight this year. However, if Haney succeeded to lobby WBC, it means Loma has two choices : First, to have his mandatory fight next against Haney to defend his belt, which means no unification fight next for him Second, accept being 'franchise champion' and let Haney elevated to 'full' champion. Which means he can take his time and focusing on his pursue of IBF title next. Which path do you think Loma should choose ? (Note : I'll give my personal opinion later to give chance for others to give their views)
Super Champion and Franchise Champion are crap. Nothing about those 2 World Titles is interesting. They just make people like us confuse with who the real world champion is. I suggest you not to take them seriously.
Franchise champ? Makes me think of a chain of bad fast food restaurants. Eat 70 pink slime burgers & get 3% off PPV Franchise Champ's next fight. I'll stick with Tecate & the regular meaningless belts, thank you.
Just another trick from a sanctioning bodu to keep collecting sanctioning fees while the boxers isn't holding their championship belt. And for a guy like Alvarez to call hiself champion without having to fight mandatories, have a chance losing the pursebids, location and very favorable purse split. It would be so bad for Loma if he can't be undisputed just due to politics getting in the way again. The hardest part of the division''s best boxer becoming undisputed is getting the other beltholders in the ring with you and being able to somehow keep the other collected belts with all politics in place. Not the fighting itself.
“... What I don’t understand is the complacency of certain boxing writers and TV commentators when it comes to the 42 so-called world champions that the WBA currently has in 17 divisions. “(The WBA) have been designated as Super, Regular, Interim and Gold. For example, they currently have four champions in the Heavyweight Division. ..." https://www.*****.net/2019/10/02/wbo-paco-valcarcel-wba-titles/
