Norton wins by 7 rounds KO. But there's always a danger with a wild swinging guy with a decent punch. A punch that come from nowhere against a fighter with a little of a suspect chin, a bit like Barkley v Hearn s 1!
I think if Firpo went 7 rounds with Norton Eddie Futch would take him aside and advise him to retire from boxing.
Firpo was a legitimate, if sloppy, contender that got up 8 times against only a slightly past it Dempsey, and held Wills to a tight decision. Butterbean was a sideshow attraction that got outboxed 10/10 rounds by a 52y/o Holmes. Don't worry i still think Norton beats him tho
Not even. Look at Firpo on film. Its an embarrassment to the division and the public that he was accepted as legit... If even for a minute.
Its not offensive, it's hilarious and wrong. People keep talking about how "knowledgeable" you are about boxing, and you may have a lot of information in your head, but you clearly have flaws when it comes to actually applying said knowledge in a boxing discussion. I'll freely admit you have learned more information on the sport than me but the arguments you've come up with are beyond facetious. Just like someone can be knowledgeable about military history but consistently make horrible calls and judgement when comparing the militaries of different time periods. What you are doing here is the equivalent of a war history buff claiming world war 1 soldiers would defeat modern day U.S soldiers with their old school equipment and technology. It's so idiotic it doesn't even warrant a valid, well constructed response. Anyone with an IQ over 60 and a casual understanding of the sport can see that Norton is leagues ahead of Firpo in terms of boxing skill, athleticism, stamina, etc. Even chin and power are debatable. To suggest Firpo has any chance to win outside of a puncher's chance, or that he should be favored, disqualifies your opinions from any serious head 2 head discussions by my observations. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are either trolling or defending the underdog just to play devil's advocate. Either way, I know not to take you seriously for these types of threads.
Aesthetics are worthless in the face of results. He was able to beat KO Brennan and hold Wills to a close decision. He was a legitimate contender, just a sloppy and poor one.
It was Brennan's penultimate fight. His next fight he would be KO'd again by a terminally ill B-level heavy. Before that, he had been reduced to fighting no-hopers and banking on his name. And remember, this was the guy that Greb beat 5 times, beat to an absolute pulp twice. "Bill Brennan" is just a noise your face makes and then aligns under the glow Dempsey to pretend he was ever any good. Who did Bill Brennan beat? Excerpts from the AP report on the bout with Wills... "Crowd of 80,000 at Boyle's Thirty Acres Sees Craft Negro Badly Batter Argentinian Harry Wills had battered and beaten Luis Angel Firpo into complete submission in a 12-round bout... Wills stood out as the conqueror by a margin so decisive that it left no room for debate... Wills won by a one-sided margin on points."
What if Firpo had a secret skillset we don't know about? He gets Manny Steward to work with him for 6 weeks. He starts sticking the jab, he doubles! No triples it!!!! Now Luis is moving side to side, in and out, he's dropping short rightcrosses now, Hold on! Firpo fakes the right-hand Bolo and sticks the left in Norton's ugly mug!!! Wait!!!!! Firpo is dancing!!!!!!! Something like that I don't know.
