Why did you mention Klitch? You mean he aged well? There is no way Klitch could beat Usyk now.

I think the point is that if Usyk is too small now, then Ali, Louis, Frazier and co would have been too small as well.

Lots of people don't accept that, which makes for double standards.

I know, but Usyk isn't one of the best fighters in history at hvw, Ali and Louis are. You (not you) can't jump through time and assume. Careers have to play out. They don't realize that. Ali and Louis were career heavies.

Yes, I mentioned him as an example of a guy whose size allows him to compete after his skills eroded. Would favor Usyk over him now but the guy is ancient.

Ali and Louis are career heavies. Size alone doesn't make you good or great, skills do. Usyk hasn't proven anything at hvw yet. Let his career play out.

Usyk is far more skilled than most fightes that have held the heavyweight title, the only question is size.

    Apologies...

I know its completely off topic, especially considering the obviously huge differences in style and power, but reading through a discussion like this, really puts the Tyson prime era in perspective...how a 5'10 phenom completely destroyed a division that was entirely composed of dudes over 6 feet tall and the ease with which he did it...still some of the best memories from my teenage years and essentially what got me truly hooked to boxing. Back then, there was (as far as I remember) no pay per view in europe and I remember staying up late into the night to watch it live on either german or british channels on my sisters tiny tv. Good times!

On topic...when I watched his Witherspoon debut, I didnt get a vibe of "he's too small". He might not have the immediate power in his punches that could trouble the bigger guys, but he definitely has a sort of 'doggedness' after the first few rounds that I could see having an effect. He's still unproven and what an earlier poster mentioned..a fight against a Chisora type will answer more questions. I'm 50/50 at the moment.

Nah, he was 268, but the important mistake is SHW is defined both ny height & weight.
And weight that is fat is not like a natural-or built up-SHW.
If Ruiz was the same body fat as a prime non-dehydrated Foreman-who falls a bit short as a modern SHW-he would weigh around 200. Ruiz likely was @ 35% BF against Joshua.
The Klitchkos. what Lewis became, Joshua...All were lean at over 240.

Being fat alone does not make anyone a SHW.

You are cherry picking guys unusually light for their time.
Jones never could do much at HW, he was a huge cherry picker there.
You round down Povetkins weight, & took the lightest weight or Wilder.

There are stats on the averages. Yes, the average weight for HWs, & muscular size, & to some extent height...
Are much more today than in the 1970's.

Ali was 6'2 209 (Edit: 209.5 according to boxrec) pounds on average during his peak 66-67.

Usyk was 215 lbs in his first HW fight. should come in a bit heavier next time. 220+
