Ali beats Tunney in a close tactical battle. I think we should compare Tunney to the lt heavy and cruiser greats.
Close fight, could go EITHER way. But at the same time, it will perhaps be the mose boring heavyweight title fight ever fought. I pretty sure fans will demand there money back after this.
everytime there is a gene tunney scenario and i actually start playing the fight out in my head i tend to lean towards tunney because i think he is extremely skilled and largely underrated. however, ali i think would have a fairly easy time with him, tunney outboxes a lot of brawler style heavyweights but he isnt gonna outbox ali. ali by easy decision
I fTunney is happy just to survive when he goes behind on the cards he could get to the final bell. Otherwise I see Tunney getting stopped.
We never got a chance to find out how good these two ATGs might have become. Tunney retired as champion when he was still improving, while Ali was forced into exile during what would have been his peak years athletically. No knockdowns or stoppage ending. This one goes 15 rounds. Tunney was far superior to Ali technically, but this boils down to height, reach, and speed.Tunney boxed tall, not something which would have worked very well against Ali. Gene's body attack might win him a few rounds against Muhammad. Grantland Rice had Harry Greb as the winner in Tunney's only official win of their five match rivalry, despite Gene carrying out Benny Leonard's advice to go downstairs. This indicates the difficulties Tunney may have had facing a faster opponent than himself, and Nat Fleischer gave Ali, not Tunney, the designation as fastest HW of them all. (This is an extraordinary assertion for an old-time experienced observer like Fleischer to make.) I wouldn't be shocked if Gene found a way to outfox Ali, but I think this comes down to Muhammad having too many physical advantages for Tunney to overcome.
Tunney is something of a stylistic turd to throw at Ali. If you want a fighter who is not in Ali's league who would pose a serious threat to him in the ring then Tunney is a good pick.
Gene Tunney never fought a heavy over 203lbs. The size Ali would have on him alone would give Ali a huge advantage. Tunney does not really have anything over Ali stylistically of in dimensions in any way. Ali is bigger, faster in both hands and feet, has more fluidity of movement, has a better chin, has more punching power, has more physical strength, and has less of a yellow streak (Watching Tunney literally run from Dempsey after the long count is one of the funniest things I've ever seen). Ali beats him by a clear decision, and probably floors him late in the fight. Tunney has next to no chance of hurting Ali, IMO. I wouldn't give Tunney more than 4 rounds against Muhammad. Muhammad Ali UD 15 Gene Tunney:good
Tunney was tough and a slick defensive boxer. Ali once said that Tunney was a scientific fighter. I believe he respected Tunney. Having said that, though, Ali was too good. I pick Ali for a unanimous 15 round decision.
How can Tunney beat Ali? I see it look somewhat look Ali vs Foster, except Tunney isn't as aggressive. Ali possibly stops him or wins on a decision.
