What's the chances of a Heavyweight boxer being successful if he started boxing at the age of 25 ?

The cutoff is 25 years, 3 months, and 11 days....any older than that, and you will never get good!

 

For what it's worth, Lomachenko had 397 amateur bouts before 25; so that's what you're up against. And I don't think being 'successful' is part of the psyche for these guys. They start young, are physically and mentally gifted, dedicated and are in a competitive environment to boot. The success is a bi-product of all this. Maybe by 29, 30 you'd be ready professionally if the conditions are optimum. Starting boxing because you want to be successful might only take you so far. How about focusing on the first amateur bout, set some conditioning goals and go from there. Put the illusions of grandeur away for the meantime and focus on the attainable goals, not the fantasies just yet.

 

Some people are just naturals and just get "it." For some the offensive skills come and develop very quickly, but its the defensive skills, intricacies, and awareness that generally need to be developed at a young age.

If he's a natural 7'0" with 87" reach, good athleticism, huge power and a granite chin, chances are he'll be doing just fine starting at 28 even.

 

@TheMotorCityCobra is a boxing trainer and if memory serves has been for years, and you can tell, he knows his ****. Very knowledgeable dude and a damn good guy, im sure hed know more than most if not everyone, the information your looking for.

Side note - look at AJ - hes an offensive machine and he started very late. Defensively hes very basic though and I dont see that ever changing. Nature and nurture both go into this equation.

I think it's possible if you have the physical tools and dedication to put in the graft but turning pro it's likely to be a hard road.

 

Not going to happen, even wilder started at like 19 or 20 and that was very late. He's been boxing over 10 years and you can still tell he was a late started. You're up against guys that were doing it from a young age with 100's of amateur fights

 

Better than fighting at a lower weight don't give a **** what anyone on here thinks but the lower weights are way more skilled in the heavys you can get pretty far with just power

James Smith, Mike Weaver and Ken Norton all took up boxing in their 20's (Weaver possibly 19) and all went on to win the heavyweight title (or at least some version thereof). Smith turned pro at 28.
