I don't call Choynski anything. Jack Johnson Jim Jeffries Bob Fitzsimmons All said he hit them the hardest.Perhaps they would be in a better position to judge than you? What agenda could I have? I'm not claiming anything,I'm just repeating what they said! McCoy weighed 158lbs for the Sharkey fight. He dropped Sharkey twice, I have the Tom Sharkey book here on my desk. Q.Do you think McCoy was a top heavyweight hitter? Q How many men over 180lbs did he stop?
Lol, it doesn't take you long to reply. Show me these quotes in context, and keep in mind what they said early in their career does NOT trump what they said later. What they say later or last is the measuring stick. This ought to be fun. Let' see those quotes As for Sharkey, he focused on offense and wasn't thinking defense. He could be hit for those who wanted to trade punches with him, an explanation on why a skilled McCoy who could hit floored him. And a reason why he had a good chin because he was hit and beat several punchers. No, I don't think McCoy was a top heavyweight hitter, but with those light gloves, he was a puncher. Don't judge being floored as equating the other guy can hit. Ali for example was floored by one guy who couldn't punch that hard.
McCoy weighed 158lbs, he knocked Sharkey down with a straight right.Sharkey got up too quick and was floored again by a left hook. That's two knockdowns from a man under 160lbs YES or NO? Ruhlin an average puncher foored him 4 times in one fight. Fred Russell no hitter had him groggy. In the first Fitzsimmons fight Fitz knocked him clean out with a left hook to the chin. In the second Fitzsimmons fight, Fitz knocked him down with a left hook, then ko'd him with a right to the temple.Fitz was a terrific puncher, no shame there. Sharkey was ko'd in his 6th fight by George Washington, the only black fighter he fought. Maher dropped him with a right hand, again Maher was an excellent puncher. Jeffries floored him with a right to the ear in their first fight, and a left hook to the chin in their second one. I'd say Sharkey wasn't hard to floor if caught flush but had recuperative powers above the ordinary, similar perhaps to Larry Holmes. Those quotes from Fitz and co, have been posted here several times look them up if you want to see them again. ps Ali was never floored by a non puncher,if you are referring to Sonny Banks,he was a puncher, and he was swinging for the fences in that fight.
I do wonder if the stage Johnson and Jeffries fought Choynski effected their opinion of his power. I think Sharkey might have said McCoy hit as hard as anyone he fought after their fight, but I'll need to check. Their comments after were interesting anyway
Gentleman Jim Corbett had said in his later years when asked that question had said that it was Joe Choynski. "Little Joe was the hardest hitter I ever tangled with". " To this day I can't figure out how a runt like him could hit so damned hard".
He also did fight him early in his career. The results certainly don't suggest he hit near as hard as Fitz. Atleast Fitz was way better at getting KOs
Choynski was a novice when he fought Corbett. In fact, James J. Jeffries claimed that the hardest blow he ever received in a bout came from Choynski during their 20-round draw. During that bout, Choynski hit Jeffries with a right hand so powerful that the punch drove one of Jeffries' teeth into his lip. The tooth was lodged so deeply that one of Jeffries' cornermen was forced to cut it out with a knife between rounds. https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZTR19080425.2.25 Jack Johnson once said, "Jeffries had a solid wallop and Fitz[simmons] could knock your head off but that man Choynski could paralyze you even when he didn't catch you flush. In my opinion, he was the hardest hitter, pound for pound, of the last 50 years ... I think his left hook was much more effective than either Dempsey's or Louis's" (see Blady 1988 p 27). Hype Igoe, famous boxing writer, asserted, “Little Joe Choynski, he of the devilish punch, would have had a royal chance with Joe [Louis]” (see Igoe, May 1936 p 4). I accept that's what they said, I just have my doubts he really hit that hard, as I don't think his results back it up. I mean look at how Creedon or other mutual opponents took his versus Fitz's punches
Sharkey said after the McCoy fight: "The blow which he caught me in the third round and which he knocked me down was a corker. It was the hardest blow that I have ever received in a contest, and I have met them all." From The Sun 11 Jan 1899 page 2
Joe Louis said Al Delaney hit him the hardest, his ko% is under 27% Archie Moore said Yvon Durelle hit him the hardest ,his ko resume isnt that impressive. Ike Williams had a ko % under 40% Charley White, a legendary left hooker has one around 50% Should we go by Box Rec or the guys that were actually being hit?
Again though, I don't think it's a coincidence so many fought the hardest hitter earlier in their career, I think that skews things. If those really are the hardest hitters, power mustn't count for much. Reading Fitzsimmons and Choynski fighting Creedon, it's hard to say Choynski is the harder puncher.
Interesting. Or the sharpest, big hitters .. The guy went forty five rounds with Jeffries but was bounced like a ball by the much lighter Fitz .. That said Sharkey in his prime was a very tough guy for sure ..
I think Jeffries fought much better versions of Sharkey than Fitz. Plus Jeffries was having injury problems.
Fitz fought Sharkey and Ruhlin in the space of two weeks both were ko'd, and Fitz was an old man then.
