Would you say George Foreman had stronger but slower punches than Mike Tyson?

Well...Guys sparked out early like Wepner instead of feeling a long beating may be wrong.
And didm't Ali say that before he faced Foreman, to Big Up how he was up for the challenge?

 

Bowe had more speed and snap in his shots than an older Forman and they were better timed.

 

I agree with most on here that Foreman had more sheer power than Tyson.
His was a slower clubbing power, Tyson’s although with a bit less power, much more speed.
Tyson though generally took fewer punches to incapacitate an opponent.
One punch knockouts are rare but I would suspect that Tyson would have had more of these than Foreman.

 

Foreman certainly caught Ali with more shots than Liston did because Ali completely outboxed Sonny it wasn`t even close, Foreman was better at cutting the ring off than Sonny, Ali said he was shocked by how well George cut the ring off on him.

 

I feel Cooney was probably a harder puncher than Tyson but the first right hand Mike floored Larry with was harder than any punch Cooney hit Holmes within their bout.

 

Tyson had more weight behind his shots than Frazier did though.

 

One day there will be a big name fighter who will answer 'who's the hardest puncher I ever fought? The guy who KTFOed me!'

 

Holy might not have looked too hurt, but he said many times he walked back to his corner after the 10th round and sincerely asked if George had knocked his teeth out.

George was so heavy-handed it was more like numbing power. He was certainly stronger than Mike on most levels; however, strength plus hand speed and timing can equal devastation: watch the kayos of Herbie Hide.

 

Ultimately it's deciding the difference between a bullwhip and a falling refrigerator.

 

Have you ever boxed before? Just because someone didnt knock you out doesnt mean they weren't the hardest puncher.

This one guy i sparred with looked like a hill billy version of David tua. 5'10, 230 lbs big and stocky with big calfs and short muscular arms. He didnt just look the part, he had very heavy punches. I remember he nailed me so hard my head gear literally spun around and i was facing the back of the head gear! They had to stop it for 30 seconds to turn it back around and strap it back in.

Anyway, he didnt ko me but he was by far the heaviest clubbing type i faced and his punches had the most force. And yes he hit harder than the 2 people who floored me.

Some boxers don't remember the feeling how the punches felt when they were KO'd. That could be another explanation. Sometimes the brain doesn't want to remember.

 

That's the thing though. It was close. One judge had Liston ahead 58-56 one had Ali 58-56, and one had it even. So not only was it close, neither man had the advantage. On the other hand Foreman was behind on all scorecards and landed little of note.

Also while it may be true Wepner fought a young George. He fought an old shot Liston, quite possibly in his 50s.

 

So you are saying the younger Foreman had more speed and snap than Bowe did and they were also better timed?

 

Punching power is hard to figure out. Tyson was heavier plus had faster punches then Prime Foreman. I believe Forman had more power though.

Could be something to do with velocity at impact. Or how well the body is connected making it more of a single unit like a hammer.

 

Tyson's power was the surprising type. In his prime his speed was his power and ability to close the distance and land punches from unexpected angles was his key. Something like prime Ali ( But of course he hit harder than Ali) But fighters like Shavers, Lyle, and Forrman , their power was more thudding than explosive and unexpected.
A fighter could see clearly a punch coming from those 3 fighters and be ready for it , yet get KO'ed all the same.
