Daniel Jacobs gets a nod for me. re-watched a bit of Jacobs vs Sulecki and something struck me. As good as Jacobs is, there are flaws. He is a textbook fighter IMO. Good all around athlete. Good feet-work, power, chin, stamina, BUT..... He's one of those but fighters! He is better than a paper champ, but not great. Sulecki was landing at times flush. But Daniel kept at it and earned another hard fought decision. 2010 loses his WBO Title shot. 2014, Four years later he gets another shot & wins WBA & defends four times, quietly doing his job 2017 Fights for 4 belts, loses a contested decision. Fights 5 out of 6 fighters in a row who were undefeated. Quillen 32-0. 3G 36-0. Sulecki 26-0. Arias 18-0. Derevyanchenko 12-0 2018 He gets the IBF strap. 2019 Loses his strap and chance to get 2 more against Canelo 51-1-2. For a total decade: 2010-2020 Who can claim they were Great at Middleweight if they hadn't fought Jacobs? When Canelo, Golovkin retire how can their fans say anything other than "He beat Jacobs didn't he?" Murata, Andrade, Charlo, Szeremeta, how can these guys claim they were top MWs if they hadn't crossed paths with Jacobs? Daniel is no gate keeper. He isn't a paper champion. He isn't a ducker. He isn't a haggler for $. He's the one that somehow makes fights without back n forth mouthing off. He forces come forwarded fighters to rethink that strategy. Hasn't been (exposed), hasn't been just blown away. He forces counter punchers to adjust and take risks. He isn't the guy you fight to get a title shot. He is the boxer that either has a belt or is trying to get another one. Thank You Daniel Jacobs for stacking your resume with champions, the undefeated & the young and prime foes. You may never be called an all time great. But any all time Greats at Middle Weight from 2010-2020 will use your name to prove (HOW THEY BECAME ATGs!)
I second this post I have said before and done a thread on it that Jacobs is due alot of credit. Looks like the post above almost copied parts of it. I don't think Jacobs won all the decisions he got or lost all the decisions that went against him but every decision fight is debatable and could be argued
Reggie Johnson, possibly a HOF himself. William Joppy. Jean Pascal Alot of others above the beltholder level but just below HOF level
When I 1st started posting years ago, Reggie was the go-to name for Jones Jr., John David Jackson, James Toney, Tarver all used his name to solidify their greatness.
Proving once again that being undefeated doesn´t mean **** all. In the vast majority of cases it reflects a lack of experience.
Hearns being an ATG made a lot of them. Even when he beat them like Duran or Benitez, he made them in the spotlight also. Greats elevate great fighters.
Pacquiao, Mayweather, Mosley, Tito, Hopkins and Whitaker (unofficially) all were elevated to certified ATGs and there wins over Del a Hoya definitely contributed.
Well, if you were a top welter in the 1990s, you had to have Oba Carr 's name on your resume....although he certainly wasn't an elite fighter by any stretch Hector Camacho was a borderline great fighter IMO, but even if he wasnt , you had to get past him if you wanted to claim your own dominance in and around the 147 division And I wonder, would Evander truly have ATG status without his trilogy with Riddick Bowe? I know with Holyfield, Bowe's career surely would not be remembered nearly as well Can't forget my man Gerry Cooney either
Alberto Davila, I think, helped elevate Wilfredo Gomez's and Carlos Zarate's resume when he lost to them and then eventually becoming boxing champion (albeit through tragic events) himself later on. Joe Brown's name also helped elevate Carlos Ortiz, Sandy Saddler, and Nicolino Locche.
some people who argue about Hector being borderline since some think he is great. I don't. I don't think he had a great career. I think he had a hall of fame career, but he was not great. He could have been. He was off to a good start
