all this talk of Benn Sr. coming back at such an OLD age was largely to deflect from the elephant in the room which no one seems to mention... Conor Benn is not getting any younger either here is he..
Just watched nigels instagrsm video of why he called it off He 100% got knocked out in sparring He wanted to have a hard spar with Craig Richards, but apparently his shoulders wouldn't let him throw any right hands? There's been plenty of videos of him smashing the bags with that right. Plus Connor mannerisms in the video, he probably watched his dad get sparked out earlier that day If you watch Benn hitting pads, his chin is always right up in the air. Combine that with not having sparred in 23 years, and being 55 years old. Then throwing himself in for a hard spar with a current active pro, it doesn't take a genius to work out he got chinned No shame in it, of course he can't come out and say that, but I'd wager a large amount of money on what I said being accurate
in fairness having just watched the vid , and looking closely at connors facials when benn mentions cortisone and shoulder he looks at floor , he said his time is up , if it was just a shoulder hed be talking about postponing and the demenaour of both is akin to an ifl vid in dressing room after someones been beat , reality hits harder than a prime benn , so glad he wont be taking any more punishment , my all time fav and even looking at him on the pads 5 years ago seems hes slipped alot
I’m a bit gutted, I was supposed to be going down to Brentwood this week to see Benn training. To be honest, I’ve also been given the impression that sparring opened his eyes to the harsh reality of being 55 years old in this game. After making such a big deal of ‘closure’, Nigel would of just postponed if it was ‘injury’ related.
His checks and eyes are swollen in the video. He has obviously been hurt by Richard's as one would expect. Hopefully that gave him his closure behind closed doors.
I've said before that if ever a fighter was 'done' it was Nigel at the end of his career. There wasn't much resemblance between the guy in the ring and the feared Dark Destroyer, he was utterly shot. Yet in all this talk and self deception that's been the backdrop to the comeback, there may have been a kernel of truth. If things were as chaotic in Benn's personal life as he says, if the substance abuse had been a factor, if the sheer accumulation of wars had beaten him down then maybe, just maybe, a couple of years away from the ring could've seen him make something of a comeback. He certainly had the following and the aura may have been restored such that he could've been manoevred into a better final fight as a capstone to a great career. This however, this was just wrong from the outset.
As others have mentioned, I honestly believe the sparring session provided him with all the closer he needed. Along with Naz , Nigel Benn was the most exciting British Boxer I ever had the privilege of watching and that is how he should always be remembered. This content is protected
You're probably right, but the show would have been insured and with an injury postponement it could have been rescheduled at a smaller venue. The fact Benn has not mentioned rescheduling the fight speaks volumes. Regardless of the real reason, I am just happy it is not happening.
Thank F it isn't happening. Legend Benn is but the old man needs to just take a seat, keep in shape, guide his son and never ever, ever consider a comeback again.
Prayers answered. Now thankfully won't have to see my favourite fighter of all time being KO'ed in a sad and embarrassing manner. At least now fans of Nigel won't have their memories of him tainted. The most entertaining and ferocious British fighter of the last 30 years, the wars with Eubank, McClellan, Barkley, DeWitt, Watson etc. will never be forgotten, thanks for the memories Nigel but just leave things as they were.
