So my dad gave me home work..wanted me to watch holmes spinks 1 and 2 and get back with the scores..I had spinks 146 to 139 the first fight
I felt Holmes fought the fight as if he should win cause hes champ..

Anyway point is...what appearances do you remember spinks making as champ..was a a popular champ?? Who was around and remembers

I reckon he should have got the rematch decision, but Spinks was so bloody akward to fight and I don't think Holmes ever sussed him out. The Cooney fight, some gave Gerry a good chance, him just being a blown up light heavy, but Cooney was a shell in that fight. The Tyson fight.. Well a lot of respected people gave The jinx a good shot,.. Say no more. But a great light heavy and he beat an ATG in Holmes so who can knock him?

I could imagine his HW title run must’ve been a bummer. His first title defense against Steffen Tangstad? On paper this guy doesn’t look like he deserved a title shot at all. Very underwhelming considering all eyes must’ve been on Spinks at this time after just shocking the world. At this time there was loads of interesting match ups out there for him. Then after a 9 Month lay off he fights a Gerry Cooney that’s done very little since losing that mega fight to Holmes. Although from what I understand Spinks/Cooney was a big fight and a success. Then another year lay off before FINALLY fighting Tyson. Admittedly I don’t know first hand. I was born in 1986 lol so before my time. I could imagine though it must’ve been pretty frustrating waiting for HW Champ Michael Spinks to make a move

There was the sort of feeling at the time that it was a terrific achievement but sort of a manufactured thing, and had as much to do with timing and circumstance as anything. Despite all of Mackie Shilstone's weight training and whatever the scales may have said Spinks was never a real heavyweight. No one thought he could stand up to a Witherspoon or a Page or anyone like that. It did seem that there was an asterisk at the end of that sentence.

This is not to detract from his huge achievement. All credit to Michael, he knew how to prepare and how to execute the perfect fight plan against an old, immobile Holmes, but it wasn't as if anyone (even Spinks, most likely) thought to themselves "Okay, let's just be a heavyweight on even terms with all the others now." It wasn't like that at all.

How did Spinks put on 30 pounds in just 3 months from his last light heavyweight fight to when he challenged Holmes?

Just scored the 2nd spinks fight I had it 144 to 142 for holmes ...larry didnt get tired the 2nd time ...the 1st fight spinks boxing skills carried him..he was jerky and it made it very impossible for holmes to load up on anything ..everytime he loaded up on the right spinks jumped jumped in landed did work..and jumped out before holmes could get off..
The 2nd fight holmes was more into getting his shots off ..he let them go..everytime spinks jumped in holmes was there and hurt him ...great fights during a weird time in the heavyweight division

It would have been interesting if Byrd and Spinks swapped eras.

I think Byrd would have beaten and old version of Holmes and Tyson. Whereas I don't think Spinks would have won a world title in the late 90s or early 2000s.

    But we will never know.

Holmes performance in the first fight was dreadful,,he looked like he was expecting Spinks to be sacrificed on an altar and all he had to do was swing the ax and be 49 -0. I hold Spinks very lightly as heavyweight champ, the Holmes of 1980, and probably the Cooney of 80 would've blitzed Spinks out.

    Ha lol

I don't rate Vitali very highly H2H and probably not top 30 as a HW ATG. No doubt he's favourite but I like an upset here, although I'm completely aware that Vitali could catch Spinks until he folds like a deckchair.

I think Spinks would be savy enough to parry Vitali's overrated, slower jab and snap a counter jab in his face, and land cleaner, non arm punches to take rounds.
Vitali imo doesn't throw the type of one bombs needed to stop Spinks, his arm punches will hurt, but not enough to stop Spinks.
