I would love to hear CLAY MOYLE & KLOMPTONs take on Langford vs. Greb. They both post here. But I don't think the issue is addressed in eithers book.
When the fight was actually possible, from 1917 on Id favor Greb, pretty comfortably. Langford wasnt exactly a killer during that period. In a mythical matchup itd be more difficult to figure and a lot depends on the parameters you set i.e. does Langford have to make weight etc. Langford liked big slower guys for a reason. I dont think Greb ever fought a puncher as dangerous as Langford but I dont think Langford ever fought anyone as fast, elusive, durable, and busy as Greb. If it goes to the cards you have to favor Greb and despite Langfords prowess and reputation as a puncher plenty of guys went the distance with him so its not like all he has to do is touch Greb and Greb is suddenly just going to wilt or fall apart. Itd be interesting.
I agree. Has Moyle ever mentioned his opinion? And is there a greater matchup than this? What if Robinson is thrown in for a rd robin?
I dont know. There are a lot of great matchups we can ponder. I think Duran-Ike Williams would be a barnburner myself.
I'd second this, my favourite fantasy fight is between Gatti and Chacon but for one including certified ATGs I don't think you need to look further than Archie Moore vs Bob Fitzsimmons, Joe Frazier vs Evander Holyfield or Montreal Duran vs Kid Gavalin
Many years ago Nat Fleischer answered this question from a reader. “In what round would it take Sam Langford to catch up to Harry Greb and stop him”? Fleischer who saw both Langford and Greb ringside replied: "I don't think that Sam Langford would ever catch up to Harry Greb”
