well I am a pretty big Frazier fan who thinks he gets sold short a lot on this forum....but even though his chin is better than a few will acknowledge it’s clearly not a top tier chin and certainly not top 10 or even a top 20 one...even for a Philly guy.
1 Ali 2 Holmes 3 Tyson 4 Marciano 5 Tua 6 Vitali 7 McCall 8 Cobb 9 Mercer 10 chuvalo 12 Holyfield 13 Foreman 14 Bowe 15 Ike Perhaps Bonavena all off the top of my head seem like guys I would say had better chins. I imagine that there are others as well and not all of them greats. where exactly would you place his chin?
Your points obviously weren't proven seeing as me and several others disagree. Your list of 50 punchers is very subjective. And even if for the sake of argument it were a fact they hit harder than fraziers competition, that isnt evidence they would beat him. You are over simplifying thins. You cant determine who'd win a fight by plugging in who was the harder hitter into a formula. There are dozens of other factors. You are defeating your own argument mentioning tyson and tua as being swarmer since we both agree They had superb solid chins. Any successful swarmer at heavyweight had one and/or superb defense (Dempsey had both a good chin and good head movement, rocky was made of rock, etc). My point about the Bonavena fights is that "almost" Getting KO'd doesn't matter knowing the context is that he rallied back to hear the final bell in both fights with a good puncher. Which points to good recovery and grit even if you disagree on how good Frazier's chin was. Tyson had a better chin but Frazier had better recovery and stamina. Question: how do you rate Frazier's recovery on a scale of 1-10?
Not top Tier my ass. Nobody else is getting hit with those shits from Foreman and getting up 6 times.
This may be the best point I've seen in the whole thread, toughness and durability are separate things
Its amazing they someone could watch Foreman/Frazier and come away thinking Frazier's chin was the problem. George Foreman was teeing off full force on an already hurt fighter. One of the greatest punchers/Finishers of all time. Blame his style, his defense, his one dimension but his chin? You gotta be crazy. If he went down just once or twice and stayed down does that mean his chin was better? Ali didn't and couldn't take the same punches Frazier did against Foreman. He would've been on the canvas too. Ali had another dimension and more versatile talent than Frazier. He didn't have to take 1/10th of those shots. Larry Holmes couldn't have taken them either.
What do you mean my points weren't proven. The puncher's I listed in an overwhelming sense hit harder than ANY puncher Frazier beat. It's very apparent, you can only nitpick on a few, and I can add far more if I spent the time. You keep saying the word subjective, everything is subjective but if we watch and observe we can separate. If you want to argue Ali and Bonevena were big punchers in the class I listed, you'd be wrong, but I'll point out one stopped him, and in the other fight had him hurt, and the other floored him twice and the only true puncher Frazier fought stopped hin twice and floored him many times, You still did not answer my question on a scale of 1-10, where would you place Frazier's chin? One can be a successful swarmer if one out works and out hit his competition that does not include a big puncher, which is where Frazier's career was guided. In terms of the more famous swarmers like Tyson, Marciano, and Dempsey Frazier chin rates 3rd or 4th. In terms of heart, and the will to get up on a scale of 1-10, I'd give Frazier a 9 or 10, but it's clear his body couldn't take it and has limitations that started sooner than those with sturdy chins. Just because he wanted to get up and continue does not mean he shook off the blow. My point, he could not recover and get his feet under him after one Foreman bomb, but boy did he try.
Who gets hit by Fireman like that and does not go down other than Chuvalo who was insanely tough ? I don't think Ali would have taken those shots . Klitschko took one from a 37 year old Less and were saying he had an all time chin .. there are very , very few men that could take that sort of power ..
Foreman was a big hitter no doubt, but he sure fought plenty of guys not know for taken a punch. Shavers, Norton, et. Lyle who didn't have a top chin either took Foreman's shots much better than Frazier did. Lots of other did. Ali took Foreman's shots, not his best because he was learning away from them, but he got hit for sure. Lennox could hit, that uppercut would have ended Frazier.
Lyle didn't take Foreman's shots better. Ron was 6-3 and was able to box Foreman from the outside. He didn't walk right into George's uppercuts. Again he had another dimension to his game. He didn't take the flush shots Joe took, not even close but when it got down to it he ended up in the same place but stayed down. I cant believe I have to explain this...Lyle took maybe 25% of the shots Joe took yet took a 10 count. You want to separate chin/heart but can't seem to grasp that defense and style played a huge part. /Thread
