Marvin was done and spent when he was 32. Hopkins longevity is outwordly as he's a freak of nature. He is the exception to all the rules when it comes to when a fighter should give it up. I don't think anyone will ever replicate his longevity.
That's what he did. That's why his career stirs up such great debates. You have to give him huge credit for fighting a monster like Kovalev at almost 50, but then you look at how he dragged Winky up.
You can only take your hat off to him. But you have to ponder whether he would or could have done that, if he'd have had tougher/more fights than what he had. Marvin fought almost 70 times before he was 33. That's mentally taxing as well as physically taxing. Also, Marvin couldn't really achieve anything more. He had no more goals. You couldn't really expect him to go to LHW. He didn't have the frame to do it. And I think the Mugabi fight took a lot out of him.
Loudon, he was obviously done against Mugabi. His footwork was gone as were his reflexes. He couldn't get out of the way of Mugabis shots. If he hadn't a granite chin, he would have been knocked out.
Even when you try to be correct , it comes out wrong. Hagler lost to fighters moving up didn't he? 1 ) GGG only lost in a robbery to Canelo 2 ) Canelo was busted for PED's 3 ) Canelo was likely over 175 pounds for these fights, hardly a welter weight. 4 ) Mayweather and Pac would NEVER fight GGG at 160, but if either did he get the same legacy boost that Monzon and Hagler receivers from fighting lower weight fighters making the jump to 160
As I've said before, I don't see much difference in Hopkins's level of challengers compared to Hagler's. I don't think any of them ruled over a particularly strong era. I think the 88-94 period was much, much stronger than any of their eras and I'd have today's as stronger as well. That's just how it looks to me. Purely hypothetical, of course.

Soooooo much depth. It's not overly like there were a bunch of greats or anything but the strength of the overall group was superb.
