What's your opinion on Jhonny Gonzalez as a fighter? How good of a boxer is he?

He really gets overlooked/underrated nowadays, mostly being remembered for losing against to Israel Vazquez and Toshiaki Nishioka (despite having big wins over Hozumi Hasegawa and Abner Mares). But he was always an excellent boxer puncher with textbook skills and destructive power. His chin and fragile body were his downfall. He was a hell of a fighter though who made some exciting fights.

Definitely one of the least talked about fighter who still fights today.

He's been one of my faves for a long while now! Been a few times I thought he should hang em up, but he pulls out a good win here and there. One of my fave fights of his was against Izzy Vasquez.

No wonder you never supported him. He's not 'elite' enough or a popular cash cow...

To be fair I only really know of him from the Mares, and Russell fights and the can crushing in between. He had a long career before that which I had no exposure to. From what I saw he was a fighter with elite power who lacked other elite attributes.

Style Summary: imagine if Junior Jones was reincarnated in Hidalgo Mexico. Extremely fragile with unpedictable cardio. Prone to bleed easily. On the plus side, his offense was nothing less than lethal: very fast, brilliant finishing instinct, with devastating kick in his punches. Good defense too, considering how heavily his game was focused on offense and he remained calm while hurt or under pressure. In a weird way he kind of fought like a blend of the Nacho Beristein style, plus some of Erik Morales' more upright 'Kangaroo Style'. Sounds strange, but you can see elements of both in his game.

Notable Wins: Hazumi Hasagawa, Ratanachai Sor Vorapin, Fernando Montiel, Mark Johnson, Tomas Villa, Adonis Rivas, Irene Pacheco, Abner Mares, Jorge Arce

Notable Losses: Izzy Vasquez, Gary Russell Jr., Daniel PDL, Gerry Penalosa, takashi nishioka

His career was a bit similar to Oscar Larios, in that both guys overcame limitations to accomplish a lot, by virtue of being really persistent. Gonzalez was significantly better than larios though, although Larios was consider the top dog at 122 for a year or two, while Gonzalez was never considered the best in the world at any point.

Think vazquez cemented himself a place in history forever for his epic trilogy (not so much fight 4) with marquez... Ruined each other with those fights... But ****in hell what fights they were

Jhonny had serious one punch KO force. Nowhere near HOF career but packed a punch for a potential one and put fear into opponents mid, yet his chin let him down. Either wayish win over prime Monitel, war vs. Israel, KO of Mark Johnson, prime Hasegawa (that one still hurts), Mares, late Arce, Pacheco some former champs, solid list of resumes and not many losses to be ashamed of.

@The Funny Man 7 post is a good way to check him out.

20 years & still fighting? I thought he retired, but I'd say he's one of those boxers that could qualify in a post I made about fighters who made All Time Greats. Can't just walk in and expect to beat Johnny. I didn't expect him to beat Fernando Montiel, but he showed his adaptability in a 4 year reigning streak fighting as often as 5-6 times a year.

Side note another fighter to check out...as I perused his boxrec (it was mentioned a few posts up) is Gary Penalosa. TOTALLY FORGET him. But he IMO was another fighter good enough to make it to the top, but usually lost to just top tier. Beat & retired one of my favorite little dudes Jorge Arce.

I rate JG as one of the better bantam weight champs of the decade (2000-2010)
